
G-Braves lose in road trip opener to Columbus

The Lead: The Columbus Clippers beat the Gwinnett Braves 7-5 at Huntington Park in Columbus, Ohio Friday night in game one of the four-game series and the first game on the Braves' 11-game road trip. The Clippers move to 45-30 on the season; still in first in the International League West. The G-Braves drop to 34-41 and are 10.5 games in back of the Durham Bulls in the IL South. The Braves also are now 0-5 on games that begin a road trip.
It Was Over When: The Clippers scored four runs in the bottom of the sixth inning. It turned a Braves 3-1 lead around and gave the Clippers a 5-3 lead heading to the seventh. The Braves had broken a 1-1 tie with two runs in the top of the inning on solo homers by Barbaro Canizares and Jordan Schafer. The Braves trailed 7-3 entering the top of the ninth, but rallied for two runs. However, they left the tying runs on base as the game ended.
Braves Beat:
On the Mound: LHP Jose Ortegano again failed to hold a lead and suffered the loss: His line: 5.0 IP, 6H, 4R, 3ER, 2BB, 4K. Scott Proctor relieved Ortegano in the sixth: 1.1 IP, 2H, 1R/ER, 1BB, 1K. Corey Gearrin entered in the 7th: 1.2 IP, 2H, 2R/ER, 2BB, 1K.
At the plate: Matt Young went 3-for- 5 with a RBI to move his average to .300 on the season. Barbaro Canizares went 2-for-5 with his fourth homer of the season. Jordan Schafer went 1-for-4 with his first home run. Luis Bolivar was 2-for-4 with two runs scored.
The opposition:
On the Mound: RHP Carlos Carrasco got the win. His line: 7.0 IP, 8H, 3R/ER, 2BB, 8K. Josh Judy entered in the eighth: 1.2 IP, 4H, 2R 0ER, 0BB, 1K. Justin Germano pitched to one batter and got the save.
At the plate: Michael Brantley, former Georgia Tech star Wes Hodges and Brian Bixler each had two hits. Jared Goedert hit a solo homer in the 6th. It was his 7th of the year.
On Deck: The Braves and Clippers continue the four-game series Saturday night with game two of the series in Columbus. First pitch at 7:05 p.m. RHP Tim Gustafson (7-4, 4.92 ERA) is scheduled to start for the Braves. Columbus will start RHP Jeanmar Gomez (4-7, 5.76 ERA).
