Syracuse, N.Y. - The Syracuse Chiefs, the Triple-A affiliate of the Washington Nationals, captured their series opener with the Pawtucket Red Sox 6-1 Friday night at Alliance Bank Stadium. Syracuse (43-33) won for the second time on their current eight-game homestand. The PawSox (33-41) dropped to a league-worst 12-25 in away games this season.

The Chiefs broke a scoreless tie with a big second inning against Pawtucket starter Felix Doubront. The inning produced three runs and saw nine Syracuse hitters come to the plate. With both Chase Lambin and Pete Orr running on the pitch, Pedro Lopez grounded a single down the right field line, scoring Lambin from second. After a balk by Doubront brought home another run, Justin Maxwell walked with the bases loaded, plating Lopez with the Chiefs' third run.

The Red Sox cut Syracuse's lead to two with a run in the fifth. Gil Velazquez banged a double off the right field wall to put himself in scoring position with one out. Centerfielder Bubba Bell knocked in Velazquez with a single to center later in the frame.

The Chiefs pulled away in the seventh, grabbing two more runs to take a 6-1 lead. With Leonard Davis aboard on second and one out, Boomer Whiting swatted a double to left. Davis scored easily on the play for Syracuse's fifth run of the night. One batter later it was Whiting's turn to score. He touched home on Justin Maxwell's double to right.

Matt Chico won for the third time, tossing 93 pitches over 5 2/3 innings of work for Syracuse. He allowed five hits and one earned runs, walking three and striking out four.

Doubront went five innings for Pawtucket and picked up his second loss. He gave up three runs, two hits and a pair of walks in his 69-pitch outing.

Chase Lambin led the Chiefs offense with a two for four performance including his team-leading ninth home run of the year. Bubba Bell was the only Red Sox hitter with more than one hit, going two for three in the loss.

The Chiefs will face the Red Sox again Saturday night at Alliance Bank Stadium in the second game of their four-game series. Jeff Mandel (2-3, 5.58) will start for Syracuse against Pawtucket lefthander Kris Johnson (3-4, 4.68). First pitch will be at 7:00.
