Erie SeaWolves News Release
The SeaWolves offense went cold on Sunday afternoon in Trenton as they were shut out by the Thunder, 1-0, at ARM & HAMMER Park.
Erie starter Kyle Funkhouser, in his second start since come off the Injured List, was sharp early. He retired the first eight Trenton hitters of the game and struck out six of the first eight. The lone blemish on his afternoon was a two-out, solo home run off the bat of Rashad Crawford in the third. It was the game's lone run.
Trenton starter Trevor Stephan was equally as sharp. He allowed a one-out single to Cam Gibson in the second for the first Erie hit. Gibson stole second but was stranded in scoring position.
Stephan would go on to allow just one more hit, a leadoff single to Isaac Paredes in the fourth. Paredes was erased on a double play ball and Stephan would face one over the minimum in five innings.
The SeaWolves attempted to rally in the ninth against Thunder reliever Will Carter. The SeaWolves loaded the bases with one out on a Derek Hill single, Paredes hit by a pitch and Jose Azocar walk. Carter struck out Josh Lester and induced a fly ball of the bat of Gibson to end the game.
Stephan (1-3) earned his first win of the season tossing five scoreless, allowing two hits with no walks and a strikeout.
Funkhouser (0-1) took the loss allowing a run on two hits with a walk and a season-high eight strikeouts. It was the most strikeouts for Funkhouser since June 6, 2018 when he struck out nine Hartford Yard Goats.
Anthony Castro tossed three scoreless innings in relief of Funkhouser and the Erie bullpen has not allowed a run over 10 innings in the first three games of the series.
The SeaWolves go for the series win on Monday night against the Thunder at 7 p.m. Righty Logan Shore (2-5, 4.47 ERA) takes the mound for Erie against RHP Adonis Rosa (3-1, 3.41 ERA).
