Bowie Holds on for a 4-2 Win in 12 Innings

Portland, Maine - The Bowie Baysox (23-37) scored twice in the 12th inning and emerged victorious over the Sea Dogs (21-37) with a 4-2 win in the rubber match on Sunday afternoon at Hadlock Field. Bowie won the series 2-1.

Engelb Vielma led off the 12th with an RBI single off of Matthew Gorst (L, 0-4) to score the automatic baserunner Preston Palmeiro. Later in the frame, Ryan McKenna hit a sac fly to score Vielma and extend the lead to 4-2.

The Sea Dogs loaded the bases in the bottom of the 12th, but Tyler Erwin (W, 3-3) got Jhon Nunez to fly out the end the ballgame.

Both teams scored in the 11th inning. Carlos Perez hit an RBI single against Matthew Gorst to lead off the inning and score the automatic baserunner.

The Bowie bullpen combined to work six scoreless innings on just one hit. Pedro Araujo went 3.1, he struck out four and walked just one. Erwin went the last 2.1 and allowed an unearned run on a hit with two walks and three strikeouts.

Both starters were southpaws from Australia and both were excellent. Daniel McGrath went five scoreless for the 'Dogs and allowed just two hits while walking two and fanning five. Alex Wells lasted six innings and allowed a run on three hits, he struck out five and walked one.

Portland scored the game's first run in the sixth. After Deiner Lopez doubled on a ball that right fielder Yusniel Diaz lost in the sun, Bobby Dalbec drove him in with a two-out single.

Bowie answered the next half inning against Kevin Lenik on a two-out RBI double by Preston Palmeiro to score Rylan Bannon, who had been hit by a pitch. Lenik eventually struck out Mason McCoy with the bases loaded to end the inning and keep the score tied 1-1.

Jake Cosart pitched two perfect innings of relief for the Sea Dogs, Gorst went the final three and threw a career-high 64 pitches.

Portland is off on Monday and starts a nine-game trip on Tuesday night against the Altoona Curve (Pirates affiliate) from Peoples Natural Gas Field. Radio coverage on the WPEI U.S. Cellular Sea Dogs Radio Network begins at 6:15 PM. The game is available on the tune-in app and MiLB.TV.
