WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. (Aug. 4, 2015) - Strong pitching from Carson Fulmer and Brian Clark vaulted the Winston-Salem Dash by the Carolina Mudcats 4-2 Tuesday in a series opener at Five County Stadium.

After Fulmer went three innings of one-run ball with three strikeouts, Clark (7-3) shut down the Mudcats (21-18, 55-53) to end their six-game winning streak. Clark went the final six frames, surrendering just one unearned run in three hits with five strikeouts. Over his last five outings, he has given up just two earned runs in 24.1 innings, largely in a piggybacking role.

Adam Engel, who went 2-for-3 with two walks, led off the game by drilling a homer off the left field foul pole. It marked the first leadoff homer from a Winston-Salem hitter since Jacob May accomplished the feat last July 10 against Myrtle Beach.

Two batters later, Jake Peter served an opposite-field double to left before advancing to third on Trey Michalczewski's single. A Keon Barnum sacrifice fly to the wall brought in Peter to give the Dash (24-14, 54-54) the early 2-0 advantage.

Keith Curcio tripled to start the bottom of the first before scoring on a wild pitch to cut the Winston lead to 3-1. Fulmer rebounded from there to hold the Muddies to just that lone run in three innings of work. The White Sox first-round pick in June, Fulmer fanned three for the third time in as many starts with Winston-Salem.

Carolina starter Blair Walters (5-5), who pitched for the Dash in 2012, retired the first two men he faced in the fifth. Michael Danner's single preceded an Engel walk. Eddy Alvarez and Peter each chipped in RBI singles to increase the Winston-Salem lead to 4-1.

Walters surrendered more than three runs in a start for the first time all season, yielding four tallies on seven hits in 4.2 innings to take the loss.

Connor Lien began the sixth with a walk and moved to third on consecutive groundouts. A passed ball brought him in to make it 4-2, but that was as close as the Mudcats would get.

The middle game of this three-game set pits Winston-Salem's Brandon Brennan (3-3, 3.89 ERA) against fellow righty Seth Webster (6-6, 2.94 ERA) for the Mudcats. Pregame radio coverage is available at 6:45 p.m., with the first pitch at 7 p.m. on wsdash.com/broadcast and the TuneIn App.

The Dash return to BB&T Ballpark on Friday following a three-game series in Carolina. All fans can enjoy a Fireworks Show, presented by Grand Rental Station, after Winston-Salem's series opener with the Salem Red Sox. For tickets, call the Dash at (336) 714-2287 or visit wsdash.com.
