Carolina Mudcats News Release
ZEBULON, NC - Winston-Salem's Adam Engel started things off with a tone setting leadoff home run in the first and Brian Clark worked six solid innings in relief of Carson Fulmer's three inning start as the Dash snapped Carolina's six game winning streak with a 4-2 win at Five County Stadium on Tuesday night.
The Mudcats (55-53, 21-18) fell to 3.5 games out of first behind the Dash (54-54, 24-14) in the second half standings with the loss. Clark (W, 7-3, 1.97) worked the final six innings in relief of Fulmer and earned his seventh win of the season. He took over in the fourth, allowed one run and struck out five in the victory. Fulmer worked the first three innings and allowed one run and two hits in his third Carolina League start.
Clark and Fulmer combined to leave six men on base and held the hitless in six at-bats with runners in scoring position. Clark allowed a run on a passed ball in the sixth, but left the bases loaded in the eighth and allowed just one unearned run over six innings.
The Dash led 2-1 through Fulmer's three inning start and did not score again until getting two more runs against Carolina starter Blair Walters in the fifth.
Walters (L, 5-5, 2.84) took the loss after allowing four runs and seven hits over four and 2/3 innings pitched. He walked two, struck out three and failed to get through the fifth for the second time in his last three starts.
Engel's leadoff home run was his fifth of the season and hit high above the leftfield wall and high on the foul pole in the corner. Walters eventually retired Eddy Alvarez in the first after the home run, but then gave up a double to Jake Peter, a single to Trey Michalczewski and a deep sacrifice fly to Keon Barnum.
Connor Lien tracked Barnum's fly ball along the right field wall and was able to turn it into double play as he caught Michalczewski off first to end the inning. Peter managed to tag and score from third on Barnum's fly ball and the Dash took an early 2-0 lead.
Keith Curcio helped the Mudcats come back a bit in the first with a leadoff triple and run in the first. He scored on a strikeout wild pitch lost by Dash starter Carson Fulmer. The wild pitch plated Curcio from third and allowed Lien to reach first safely. Fulmer eventually escaped the first with a left on and one run allowed in the inning.
Walters settled down after the three hit, two run first and limited the Dash to one hit over the next three innings. That stretch changed though in the fifth when he gave up three hits and two runs while allowing the Dash to take a 4-1 lead.
Jorge Zavala entered in place of Walters in the fifth, but took over with the bases loaded in the inning. He managed to strand all three runners with a strikeout of Barnum and helped hold the Dash to just two runs in the inning.
Zavala was the first of three straight Mudcats relievers to turn in solid performances on Tuesday night. After leaving the bags full in the fifth, Zavala eventually worked a scoreless sixth before giving way to Clayton Cook in the seventh. Cook pitched two consecutive frames and left with two on in the ninth. Riche Tate worked the ninth and finished the inning by getting Peter to hit into an inning ending double play.
The Mudcats and Dash continue the series on Wednesday night with game two of the three game series scheduled for 7:00 p.m. at Five County Stadium. RHP Seth Webster will start for the Mudcats against RHP Brandon Brennan of the Dash.
