Frederick Keys News Release

Salem, Va. -The Frederick Keys utilized two big innings and strong work from the bullpen to defeat the Salem Red Sox 8-4 on Tuesday night at LewisGale Field. It was the Keys third straight win and moves the club back over .500 in the second-half (20-19). On the mound, Roanoke native, Mikey O'Brien, picked up the victory.

Trey Ball held the Keys offense in check for the first three innings, but struggled with command over his last two-plus frames. After retiring Josh Hart to open the fourth, the Red Sox lefty walked Tanner Witt, surrendered a single to Chance Sisco and issued an additional free pass to Jeff Kemp to load up the bases. The next batter Yaisel Mederos, then bounced a ball to the right side, but the flip by Mario Martinez to Ball (8-9) covering at first went behind the pitcher allowing two runs to score. Mederos received credit for a single and one RBI.

One batter later, Wynston Sawyer drove home Kemp with a sac-fly to right-center, while a double by Conor Bierfeldt completed the scoring. Tagged with the loss, Ball worked 5.1 innings, giving up five runs (four earned) on five hits. He walked five and struck out three. Ball has lost all five games he has pitched against Frederick this year.

The orange and black stranded a pair in the fifth, but added three more in the sixth. Following a one-out walk to Sawyer, Ball was pulled in favor of Kyle Kaminska. He would be greeted rudely by Bierfeldt, who clubbed a two-run homer to left. Finishing 2-for-3, the former Western Connecticut State product tied his Carolina League high for RBIs with three.

Hart plated Anthony Caronia with an RBI double to stretch Frederick's lead to seven, but the Red Sox scored four runs over the next two innings. With one out and men on first and second, Martinez gave the Sox their first run with an RBI single to left. An error by Hart on the throw home allowed both men to advance an extra base, while Cole Sturgeon (fielder's choice) and Jordan Procyshen (single) added RBIs to make it a four-run affair.

O'Brien (1-3) departed after a single by Jordan Betts. Ending one out shy of a quality start, the Virginian still picked up his first Advanced-A win of the year, surrendering three runs on seven hits in 5.2 innings. He walked two and struck out three.

Dylan Rheault stranded a pair on base on the sixth, before the Canadian allowed an RBI single to Wendell Rijo in the seventh which scored Mauricio Duban. That would be the final run that the Red Sox would score though, as the trio of Garrett Cortright, Matt Taylor and Donnie Hart tossed three scoreless innings to close things down. Frederick concluded its scoring in the ninth, after a wild pitch enabled Jay Gonzalez to score from third.

The Keys and Red Sox play the middle game of their series on Wednesday night. Left-hander Luis Gonzalez (5-8, 6.51) makes the start for the orange and black against Red Sox right-hander Teddy Stankiewicz (3-10, 3.86). First pitch is slated for 7:05 p.m and the broadcast can be heard on 1450 AM The Source and frederickkeys.com. The Keys return home on August 11 when the Lynchburg Hillcats come to town.
