INDIANAPOLIS - In the third of eight head-to-head meetings between the two teams this season, the Indy Fuel were defeated by the Reading Royals on Wednesday at Indiana Farmers Coliseum by a final score of 6-4. With the loss, the Fuel fell to 5-14-2-3 overall this season and with 15 points, remain alone in seventh place in the ECHL's North Division standings.
Indy came out of the gate with a purpose on Wednesday as Rhett Bly buried his fifth goal of the season just 1:17 into the game thanks to a great setup from Dean Chelios and Matt White. Reading tied the game at 17:56 of the first when Cam Reid tapped a rebound tally past Indy goaltender Mac Carruth, but the Fuel reclaimed a one-goal advantage with just five seconds remaining in the period as Kirill Gotovets nudged his third marker of the season past Royals backstop Martin Ouellette on feeds from Robert Czarnik and Anders Franzon to make it 2-1 Fuel heading into the middle stanza.
After a slow start both ways in period two, Indy's Matt White pushed the Indy lead to its largest mark at 15:26 before the Royals rattled off four straight goals through the end of the second and start of the third period to take a 5-3 lead. A Dillon Fournier score at 19:12 of the final period gave Indy hope, but a last-minute empty net goal for Kevin Walrod established Reading's 6-4 margin of victory.
Carruth was solid in his return to the Indy goal crease, making 28 saves in defeat while Ouellette earned the win in net for the Royals by virtue of a 28 save performance.
