Tacoma Rainiers News Release
TACOMA, Wash. -- The Tacoma Rainiers came up short in a 5-4 loss to the Fresno Grizzlies in the series finale between the two clubs played at Cheney Stadium on Sunday.
The Rainiers held a 4-2 edge over the Grizzlies through seven innings before surrendering a three-run frame in the eighth. Catcher Andrew Susac brought Fresno within a run when he delivered a two-out RBI single that scored Nick Noonan. Three batters later, Tony Abreu lined a go-ahead two-run single that ultimately put the Grizzlies on top for good.
Tacoma rallied earlier in the contest after overcoming a 2-1 deficit with three runs in the sixth inning. First baseman Ji-Man Choi tied the score at two after drawing a bases-loaded walk, and Humberto Quintero delivered a two-RBI double that gave the Rainiers a 4-2 edge until Fresno posted a rally of their own in the eighth.
Tacoma combined to collect nine hits in their final game against the Grizzlies. Nick Franklin led the club after going 3-for-4 with three singles, and designated hitter Jesus Montero turned in the team's other multi-hit effort with a 2-for-4 outing. Quintero's double in the sixth inning stretched his season-high hitting streak to seven games.
Reliever Logan Kensing surrendered each of Fresno's three runs on three hits in 0.2 innings of work in the eighth. Starter Matt Palmer limited the Grizzlies to two runs - one earned - on four hits in 7.0 innings. The right-hander struck out five and walked one in his 11th start for the Rainiers this season.
The Rainiers (46-50) enjoy three days off during the Triple-A All-Star Break before resuming play at Reno on Thursday, July 17. Taijuan Walker (3-1, 3.79) is slated to start the first game of Tacoma's four-game series at the Aces. First pitch for the series opener is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
