Reno Aces News Release
SACRAMENTO, Calif.- The Reno Aces went into the All-Star break on a high note, beating the Sacramento River Cats, 2-1, at Raley Field Sunday afternoon.
Sacramento broke up Reno's shutout bid in the eighth inning and got the winning run on base in the ninth, but couldn't plate a run in the final frame.
Garrett Weber's two-out RBI single to left field got the Aces on the board in the second inning. The hit moved Weber's hitting streak to six games.
Charles Brewer took over from there, cruising through six scoreless innings in the start. He gave up five hits and two walks while walking six in his first win since May 12 against Fresno.
Alfredo Marte doubled the Aces' lead in the fifth inning. With two outs in the inning, Mike Freeman singled and stole second base. Marte then singled up the middle on the next pitch and Freeman scored easily from second.
The River Cats' lone run came in the eighth inning off of reliever Will Harris. With Alden Carrithers and Jake Elmore on third and second, respectively, Daric Barton singled to score Carrithers.
Elmore would be stranded at third, however, as Josh Whitaker bounced into a 6-4-3 double play to end the inning in the next at-bat.
Jake Barrett came on in the ninth inning, and allowed a hit and a walk before getting the final out and stranding runners at first and second. It was Barrett's third save with the Aces, and the 50th of his career.
Freeman set the table for the Aces offensively, going 3-for-4 with a double, a stolen base, and the game-winning run for Reno out of the leadoff spot. Roger Kieschnick also had a multi-hit night, going 2-for-4 in his second game back since being optioned down from Arizona.
The Aces enter the All-Star break in second place in the Pacific Northern division, 4.5 games behind Sacramento. The teams will play 10 more games this season, including five home games for each club.
The Triple-A Home Run Derby is tomorrow at 3:35 p.m., and the All-Star Game is Wednesday at 4:07 p.m. Aces infielder Mike Jacobs will represent Reno in both events.
Single-game tickets and ticket plans are on sale for the remainder of the 2014 season. For more information, or to purchase an Aces ticket plan, call (775) 334-4700.
