Today's Game: The RedHawks aim to close out their series against the Iowa Cubs with a win to earn a split in their final series before the All-Star Break. Oklahoma City trails Iowa by three games for first place in the American Northern Division.
Yesterday's Games: The RedHawks split a day-night doubleheader against Iowa Saturday at Principal Park. Iowa won the first game, 6-5, while the RedHawks took the second game, 2-1. OKC built a 5-0 lead in the first game before the I-Cubs started a comeback in the bottom of the fourth inning. Down 5-1, Ryan Kalish connected on a three-run homer to pull the I-Cubs within one. In the bottom of the seventh, Jonathan Mota hit a RBI double off Jason Stoffel (2-3) to tie the game. Kevin Chapman then came into the game and walked Lars Anderson. Eli Whiteside followed with a game-winning single to give Iowa the come-from-behind win. Iowa reliever Marcos Mateo (1-0) got the win...After the disappointing turn of events in the first game, the RedHawks were able to rebound in game two. RedHawks starting pitcher Rudy Owens (5-4) set the tone, going 6.1 innings, allowing one run on six hits. OKC scored in the first inning. Austin Wates led off the game with a walk and stole second base. Wates would later score on a RBI single by Marc Krauss to make it 1-0. The RedHawks added another run in the second. With runners at second and third, a passed ball by Iowa catcher Rafael Lopez allowed Joe Sclafani to score. In the bottom of the seventh, Logan Watkins hit a RBI groundout and moved the tying run to third with two outs. Jorge De Leon then got Chris Valaika to ground out to earn his first save of the season with OKC.
Today's Probable Pitcher: Mike Foltynewicz (6-6) seeks his first win since June 20 after going 0-2 in his last three starts...He suffered a loss in his most recent outing July 7 against New Orleans. He allowed a season-high seven runs on six hits. He walked a career-high six batters and struck out two over three-plus innings...He leads the team with 84 strikeouts to rank third among Astros minor leaguers. He also is second on the team with six wins and third with 86.2 IP...Over his last five starts, Foltynewicz has allowed 26 runs (23 earned) over 24.1 IP and opponents are batting .347. Before that, he had allowed just 14 runs in his previous 10 outings combined...During a streak of six straight quality starts May 5-June 7, Foltynewicz went 3-2 with a 2.35 ERA and held opponents to a .172 average. He also struck out 44 batters over 38.1 innings...He's recorded games of 12 and 10 strikeouts to become just the fourth pitcher in team history with multiple double-digit strikeout games in the same season...Each of his first three starts in day games have been quality starts, and although his record is 1-2, he's posted a 2.50 ERA and held opponents to just a .136 average under the sun...The RedHawks are 9-6 in his 15 starts and 11-7 in games he's pitched in...Today marks his first career game against Iowa.
Against the I-Cubs: 2014: 3-3 2013: 8-8 All-time: 109-118 In IOW: 49-65
Five of the first six games of the season series have been decided by one run (OKC is 3-2)...The RedHawks won the first series between the teams, taking two of three last weekend in Oklahoma City. All three games were decided by one run...Oklahoma City has won eight of the last 11 games against Iowa, with seven of the last eight decided by one run...The teams split their 2013 series, 8-8. OKC won the final five meetings between the teams and swept their last series in Bricktown July 26-29, 2013. Nine games between the teams were decided by one run (OKC went 5-4)...The RedHawks went 2-6 in Des Moines last season...The RedHawks were a combined 22-10 against Iowa in 2011 and 2012.
Highs and Lows: After taking three of four during a series in Reno June 17-20, the RedHawks' record stood at a season-best eight games above .500 (42-34). Since then they've gone 7-15, and in five of those losses they've had a lead in the seventh inning or later. After losing game one of yesterday's doubleheader, the RedHawks' record fell below .500 for the first time past the third game of a season since the end of the 2011 campaign...After going 24-16 over their first 40 road games, the RedHawks have dropped nine of their last nine 11 away from OKC.
Close Calls: 10 of the first 13 games this month have been decided by one or two runs, with the RedHawks going 4-6 in those contests. Seven of the last 10 games have been decided by just one run, and each of the RedHawks' last four wins have been by one run.
Men of Steal: After collecting a stolen base last night, Austin Wates is now tied for the PCL lead with 25 steals along with Tacoma's Xavier Avery and Omaha's Paulo Orlando. However, Wates has played in 60 games -- a significantly less amount than the others (Avery - 81; Orlando - 91)...The RedHawks continue to pace the PCL with 19 steals this month and are tied for fifth in the league overall this season with 73 swipes.
All-Star Presence: After missing about a week due to a leg injury, Gregorio Petit has hit safely in his five games since returning to the lineup. He is currently on an eight-game hitting streak (10-for-29) and has hit safely 23 of his last 25 games...In order to let his leg further heal, Petit will not participate in this week's Triple-A All-Star Game. Only one of the three RedHawks initially selected to the All-Star Game (Max Stassi) will now head to Durham, with both Petit and pitcher Nick Tropeano currently on the mend.
Innings Eaters: The RedHawks have had their starting pitcher last at least six innings in three straight games for the first time since a run of eight straight, June 2-10. Rudy Owens' outing in game two was the first quality start by a RedHawks pitcher in 11 games. Over the last 25 games, the starting rotation has a 6.12 ERA (90 ER/132.1 IP) and has only produced five quality starts.
Back to the Future: Later today RedHawks outfielder Domingo Santana will participate in the annual All-Star Futures Game at Target Field in Minneapolis. It's the second straight season a RedHawk has played in the game, as George Springer did last year.
First is the Best?: Last night's game two win ended a peculiar streak, as the RedHawks had lost each of their nine previous games when scoring first. In the RedHawks' last 10 games, the team that has scored first has lost eight times.
