Omaha Storm Chasers July 13th Game Notes
July 13, 2014 - Pacific Coast League (PCL1)
Omaha Storm Chasers News Release
LAST NIGHT'S SUSPENSION: Brian Bocock and Whit Merrifield had back-to-back RBI doubles a batter before the game was suspended at 4-0 Omaha in the top of the fourth with runners on first and second with one out. The game will be resumed during Omaha's next trip to Colorado Springs on August 8. The Storm Chasers had ten hits in just three plus innings (every player except Pedro Ciriaco had a hit), and have double-digit hits in five of the last six games.
WINS AT ALL-STAR BREAK: Omaha has 50 wins before the All-Star Break, tied for their third most since joining the PCL (50-41 in 2011, 50-48 in 2003). Omaha's most wins at the All- Star Break are the 56 wins they had in 2012 (56-35) and the 55 wins they had in 1999 (55-34).
A GREAT RUN: Including the 3.0 innings last night, Omaha pitchers have allowed just three earned runs in 35.0 innings (0.77 ERA), after the Storm Chasers had given up four runs or more in six of the first nine games this month and had a 4.76 ERA. Omaha has the third lowest ERA in the league at 4.05, and have been in the top three in ERA in the PCL each year since 2010.
WHIT GETS IT: Whit Merrifield is riding an 13-game hitting streak counting last night, second longest in his career (career high is a 14-game streak he set on July 18-August 2, 2011 with Wilmington). The longest hitting streak by an Omaha player this season is 14 games set by Matt Fields from April 4-17 and Christian Colon from June 10-26. Omaha is now the only team to have four players with a 13-game hit streak or more (Paulo Orlando's 13-gamer May 12-25).
HAVING A FIELDS DAY: Matt Fields notched his team-leading 54th RBI last night, and since June 1st he has 33 RBI in 45 games (21 RBI in his first 50 games this season). In that stretch he is tied for the second most in the PCL (only Adam Duvall of Fresno at 34 RBI has more since June 1st). Fields is four away from matching Omaha's leader in 2013 (Christian Colon at 58).
JULY TURNAROUND: The Storm Chasers started off the month of July with a 1-5 record, but since the series finale with the Sky Sox on July 6 they have won five of six to even the record at 6-6. Omaha has held their opponent to three or less runs in five of the last six games.
ROAD WARRIORS: Omaha is tied with New Orleans, Las Vegas and Oklahoma City for the most road wins in the league at 26, and have the third best road winning percentage at .531 (Reno has a league-leading .543 percentage at 25-20 and Las Vegas has a .553 at 26-21). In the division Omaha has a losing record in road games at 8-9 (only have games at Colorado Springs left).
MAKING EM CHASE: The Chasers lead the PCL with 133 strikeouts this month (11.1 per game), and Omaha has now climbed to the top five in the league, ranking fifth at 763 strikeouts.
