Sacramento River Cats News Release
WEST SACRAMENTO, Calif. - The Sacramento River Cats (56-41) rallied late but ultimately fell short and were unable to sweep the Reno Aces (52-46) during the three-game series, losing 2-1, on K-LOVE Sunday Funday at Raley Field.
Reno scored the first run of the game in the top of the second when Garrett Weber singled on a ground ball, plating Danny Dorn from second base. Reno's left fielder Alfredo Marte stepped to the plate in the fifth and hit a line drive to center field sending Mike Freeman home, making the game 2-0.
After trailing the Aces for the entire game, Sacramento's Daric Barton singled home Alden Carrithers in the eighth, after hitting a ground ball to left field, bringing the game 2-1.
The Cats had runners on first and second with only one out in bottom of the ninth, but their comeback effort fell short as they were no match for Reno's closing pitcher Jake Barrett, who got the save after striking out Carrithers to end the game.
Aces second baseman Weber went 1-for-4 with an RBI while Freeman finished 3-for-4 with one run. River Cats shortstop Jake Elmore went 2-for-3 with an RBI, Jose Martinez went 1-for-2 with a walk, and Barton went 2-for-4 with an RBI.
Reno's starter Charles Brewer (4-7, 6.12 ERA) earned the win after giving up five hits and two walks with five strikeouts in six scoreless innings of work.
Sacramento's starter Zach Neal (2-5, 4.80 ERA) picked up the loss after throwing six innings giving up two earned runs on six hits with four strikeouts. Relievers Fernando Rodriguez, lefty Joe Savery, and All-Star Paul Smyth combined to hurl three shutout innings to keep the Cats within striking distance.
The Sacramento River Cats will travel to Albuquerque after the All-Star break, to take on the Isotopes at Isotopes Park in a four-game set on Thursday, July 17, with first pitch slated for 6:05 p.m.
After three road series against Albuquerque, El Paso, and Tacoma, the River Cats will return to Raley Field on July 29 for Toyota Family Value Tuesday to play Albuquerque in their second visit to Raley Field for a four-game set.
