
Freedom's Late Rally Comes up Short

Florence, KY - The Schaumburg Boomers(41-27) held off a late 9th inning rally and defeated the Florence Freedom(36-32)Wednesday night 6-4. The Freedom trailed 6-2 going into the 9th and scored two runs, before Patrick Mincey and Adam Tollefson put an end to the threat.
Schaumburg took an early 1-0 lead against Freedom starter Sean Gregory as Frank Pfister doubled home Karexon Sanchez in the 1st inning. In the 2nd, Sanchez connected on a two out, two-run double to centerfield, which provided the Boomers a 3-0 lead. The Freedom got on the board against Boomer starter Cody Griebling in the 2nd, on an RBI single by John Malloy. The Freedom cut the lead to 3-2 after David Harris led off the 3rd inning with his 6th homerun of the season.
The Boomers added to their lead with another two out hit in their 6th as Mike Valadez singled home Drew Heithoff to put them ahead 4-2. Then the Boomers took advantage of a rare defensive miscue by shortstop Junior Arrojo in the 7th inning. With two outs and the bases empty, Pfister reached on an error by Arrojo which was followed up by a two run homer by Steve McQuail to give them a 6-2 advantage. The Boomers produced five out of their six runs with two outs in the game.
The Freedom rallied in the 9th however against the Boomer closer Mincey. Stephen Cardullo led off with a walk, Malloy tripled into the right field corner to cut the lead to 6-3. Pierre LePage then banged a double into left field scoring Malloy to make the score 6-4. Mincey settled down to strikeout Arrojo before turning it over to Tollefson. With the tying run at the plate, Tollefson struck out both David Harris and Peter Fatse to end the ballgame.
Gregory (6-6)took the loss as he went 7 innings allowing 7 hits on 4 earned runs. Griebling (3-1) earned the win as he pitched 7 innings of 7 hit, 2 run baseball, while striking 3. Tollefson collected his second save, after striking out the final two batters. Malloy went 2-4 with 2 RBI to lead the Freedom, while LePage also turned in a 2-4 performance.
The Freedom and Boomers play the rubber match of their three game series Thursday night. Schaumburg will send RHP Robbie Donovan (7-3, 3.48) to the hill as the Freedom will go with RHP Brandon Mathes (1-0, 4.28) Thursday's game can be heard starting at 6:50 pm with Steve Jarnicki on Real Talk 1160 AM and realtalk1160.com.
