Calhoun Shuts out CornBelters

Marion, IL - Southern Illinois Miners starter Daniel Calhoun pitched a complete game shut out for the first time this season to earn his fifth win and help guide the Miners to a 3-0 victory over the Normal CornBelters. Calhoun gave up four hits, one walk and struck out six batters in his complete game. CornBelters starter Tyler Lavigne pitched a complete game as he threw eight innings and gave up seven hits. He allowed three runs, four walks and struck out nine Miners.

Southern Illinois grabbed a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning off CornBelters starter Tyler Lavigne as Carlos Mendez hit a base hit and RBI to score Chad Maddox who led off the inning with a double.

The Miners added two more runs in the bottom of the third inning off Lavigne as Chad Maddox grounded into a fielder's choice to bring in Jake Kaase for the first run in the inning to make it 2-0 in favor of the Miners. Next up was Ken Gregory who grounded out to Lavigne but scoring from third base on the play was Cory Harrilchak to give the Miners a 3-0 lead.

After a walk to third baseman Andrew Cohn in the bottom of the second inning, Miners starter Daniel Calhoun retired 20 of the next 22 batters he faced to complete the 3-0 shutout. He only gave up singles to left fielder Sam Judah in the top of the fourth inning and Cohn in the bottom of the fifth inning.

The Miners improve to 39-29 on the season and look to wrap up the three game set tomorrow night at Rent One Park. They will send LHP Shawn Gilblair to the mound as he'll be opposed by LHP Jacob Liedka. First pitch is at 7:05 pm.
