Joliet Slammers News Release
JOLIET SLAMMERS (27-40) @ EVANSVILLE OTTERS (30-37)
Wednesday, August 1- - 6:35 p.m. CT
Bosse Field - Evansville, IN
Game #68 - Road Game #32 (27-40), (14-17)
RHP #27 Matt Sommo (0-3, 4.08 ERA) vs. LHP #22 Matt Zielinski (5-5, 4.32 ERA)
Last time out...
The Slammers lost 7-3 last night. Joliet's Tommy Mendoza and Evansville's Wynn Pelzer kept the ballgame scoreless through four and a half innings, but the Otters broke through in the fifth. Greg Fontenot lifted a sacrifice fly to bring home the game's first run. They tacked on another in the sixth when Steven Marino also brought around a run on a sac fly. David Christensen led off the seventh with a triple for Joliet, and Kyle Maunus knocked him in to cut the lead in half. Joliet tied it at two when Abel Nieves tagged a sac fly, and a fielding error by Evansville gave the Slammers a 3-2 lead. But Evansville powered back. DeAngelo Mack doubled to tie it up, Brett Chamberlain followed it up with an RBI single, and Runey Davis put the nail in the coffin on a three-run home run to make it 7-3 Otters. Daniel Carela suffered the loss for Joliet out of the bullpen.
For Starters...
Matt Sommo's first start with the Slammers was a rough one on July 27 against Schaumburg. He gave up five runs on six hits in five innings of work in a 7-1 loss for Joliet. Sommo began the 2012 season with the Sioux Falls Pheasants of the American Association. He most recently pitched for the defunct London Rippers. He played his college ball at Division II University of New Haven. He led all team starters in 2011 with a 4-1 record and a miniscule 1.29 ERA. Sommo struck out 38 batters in 49 innings while walking just 12. Over his collegiate career he carried a strikeout-to-walk ratio of nearly 3-to-1.
