Freedom's Heart And Saul Blanks Kings

KALAMAZOO, MI - Everett Saul used a season best 10 strikeouts to earn his first complete game shutout of the season and the Florence Freedom downed the Kalamazoo Kings 5-0 Sunday afternoon at Homer Stryker Field.

The Sunday win wrapped up a 6-1 road trip for the Freedom has they have now won 11 of their past 13 games overall to improve to 47-43. Florence concluded their season series against the Kings at 3-9.

Florence's wins lead Saul (12-7), allowed only three hits all game to the Kings and none past the fourth inning. His offense picked him up in the fifth.

With two on and two outs, Tim Grogan cranked his twelfth home run of the season over the right field wall to give the Freedom a 3-0 lead.

It stayed 3-0 until the eighth when Ryan Basham connected for his third hit of the game. This time Basham went deep to right for a solo homer, his fourteenth, to make it 4-0. Basham finished a triple from the cycle.

Brad Hough drove home the Freedom's final run in the top of the ninth off reliever Scott Reid.

Tommy Mejia started for the Kings and was removed in the seventh. Mejia (4-3) was the Kalamazoo starter to begin the year, going 1-0 with a 1.42 ERA while recording two saves against the Freedom before Sunday afternoon. The right-hander allowed three runs over 6 1/3 innings in the loss this time around.

Florence will return home on Tuesday night at 7:05 p.m. for their first homestand of the year against the Lake Erie Crushers.
