Southern Illinois Miners News Release

LOVES PARK, Ill - Ryan Kussmaul tossed a two-hit shutout and struck out 11 RiverHawks as the Miners blew out Rockford, 10-0 Saturday night. It was the Miners fourth shutout this season. With the victory, the Miners split a doubleheader with the Hawks and remained a half-game up on second place Windy City.

Temperatures were in the mid-50s for most of the game, but the Miners bats were hot early. Landon Camp delivered a first inning three-run shot, his fourth with the Miners. It was more support than Kussmaul (4-0) needed as he stretched his scoreless streak to 16.2 innings and earned his fourth win. His 11 strikeouts were the most by a Miner since Brett Scarpetta whiffed 11 Florence Freedom hitters on Aug. 7, 2008.

Southern Illinois knocked Rockford starter Fabian Gomez out of the game in the fifth after Brad Netzel, Jereme Milons and Adam Hale each doubled to extend the Miners lead to 5-0. The Miners added two more runs against reliever Elliot Cribby in the sixth. Landon Camp led off the inning with a walk, and Bradley Goldsmith followed with a single. Goldsmith was in for Brad Miller, who was feeling under the weather and left after the fourth inning. Two wild pitches allowed Camp to score, and Goldsmith came home on Netzel's RBI single.

The Miners put the finishing touches on a double-digit victory in the seventh when former Miners reliever Marcus McKenzie walked the first three batters. Goldsmith lined a two-run double to left field, and then Stephen Holdren singled Camp home.

The Miners will finish their final regular season road trip of the year when they meet the Hawks on Sunday for another doubleheader. Joe Augustine (7-4, 3.17) will go for the Miners in Game 1 against Rockford lefty Jason Monti (7-7, 4.52). First pitch is scheduled for 3:05 p.m. In Game 2, Southern Illinois' Steve Spurgeon (0-1, 3.29) will face Rockford's all-star ace Kyle Wright (10-4, 1.93). The Miners return home on Tuesday, Sept. 1 to begin a six-game homestand against the Windy City ThunderBolts. For tickets and a complete schedule, visit www.southernillinoisminers.com.
