Lake Erie Crushers News Release

Traverse City, MI - The Lake Erie Crushers entered Sunday with a golden opportunity to make a charge in the race for the postseason, but instead were handed a painful doubleheader sweep by the Traverse City Beach Bums. Traverse City took game on in eight innings, 2-1, and then came back to beat the Crushers in the nightcap by a score of 4-1.

The Crushers drew first blood in game two, scoring a run in the fourth inning with two outs on a throwing error by Bums pitcher David Dinelli that enabled Arden McWilliams to score from third. But the lead didn't last for long as Brent Lysander surrendered a solo homer to Michael Campbell in the bottom of the fourth to tie the game. Traverse City got to Lysander for three runs in the fifth on RBI singles by Brandon McArthur and Brad Miller to seize command of the game with a 4-1 lead. The Crushers were 0-for-six with runners in scoring position.

The Crushers looked to take game one of the doubleheader behind the superb pitching of Cardoza Tucker. The right-hander allowed just three hits through six scoreless innings, all while working on three days rest. Meanwhile, the Crushers offense could manage only one run against Traverse City's David Nathanson. Wayne Bond's infield single in the second brought home Eddie Tisdale to give the Crushers a 1-0 lead.

Lake Erie carried that lead into the bottom of the seventh as Tucker was trying to complete a shutout. With one out, Mike Epping lined a home run over the right field wall to tie the game at one. The game went into extra innings and the Beach Bums would get a walk-off win in the eighth as Brian Lapin's RBI single off of J. J. Pacella scored Andrew Franco.

The losses drop the Crushers record to 52-37 heading into the final week of the season. The Crushers will take Monday off and then open up a three game series with the Florence Freedom at Champion Window Field on Tuesday evening at 7:05 P.M.
