Washington Wild Things News Release

Ypsilanti, Mich.-The Washington Wild Things (40-50), presented by Washington Federal Savings bank defeated the Midwest Sliders (38-52) by a score of 6-1, thanks to a strong outing by starting pitcher Brian McCullough.

McCullough pitched seven innings, allowing one unearned run on three hits, two walks, two hit batsmen and two strikeouts to earn the victory. He threw four innings of hitless baseball to start the game, keeping the Wild Things in a close game to that point.

Ryan Groth put the Wild Things on the board first with a two-out RBI single in the fourth inning, driving in Chris Sidick. Matt Sutton followed with another single to score Jacob Dempsey and give Washington a 2-0 lead.

The Sliders cut the lead in half in the bottom of the fourth. Robbie Knapp scored on an error by third baseman Chris Raniere on Lee Rubins' ground ball. Washington took back the two-run lead in the fifth inning, with a two-out single by Dempsey to drive in Brett Grandstrand.

The Wild Things added some assurance runs in the eighth. With the bases loaded, Groth hit a sacrifice fly to bring home Sidick. Sutton then hit a two-RBI single to make the score 6-1.

Midwest starter Kyle Wink also had a good outing. He got ten consecutive outs to start the ball game and later retired seven in a row in the fifth through seventh innings. The losing pitcher allowed five runs on five hits, with four walks and two strikeouts in seven innings.

The Wild Things return to Washington on Tuesday to begin the final six-game homestand of the season. The first pitch of Tuesday's game against the Kalamazoo Kings will be at 7:05 p.m. Pre-game coverage starts at 6:55 p.m. on WJPA 95.3 FM.
