Traverse City Beach Bums News Release

TRAVERSE CITY, Mich. - The Traverse City Beach Bums swept a doubleheader from the Lake Erie Crushers at Wuerfel Park on Sunday night, winning 2-1 in eight innings in game one and capturing a 4-1 decision in the second game. The wins spoiled a golden opportunity for Lake Erie to move within a half game of first in the East Division.

GAME ONE: Beach Bums 2, Lake Erie 1 (Eight Innings)

The Beach Bums rallied to capture the opener in extra innings.

Trailing 1-0 in the seventh with one out, Mike Epping tied the game by homering over the wall in right. Epping lifted a 2-1 pitch from Lake Erie starter Cardoza Tucker for his ninth round-tripper of the season.

Traverse City won the contest in the first extra frame. Andrew Franco led off by coaxing a walk from Lake Erie closer J.J. Pacella. He moved to second on a wild pitch and scored the winning run when Brian Lapin singled to center.

Lake Erie scored the first run of the game in the second. Eddie Tisdale singled and went to third on a hit and run single by Arden McWilliams. Wayne Bond drove in Tisdale with an infield single.

The Beach Bums were limited to just five hits in the game but two of those came from Brian Lapin. Michael Campbell reached base four times, singling and walking three times. B.J. Hagen earned the win in relief while David Nathanson tossed 7.1 innings with five strikeouts but was saddled with a no decision.

GAME TWO: Beach Bums 4, Lake Erie 1

Traverse City completed the sweep with another come from behind win. Lake Erie led 1-0 after getting an unearned run in the fourth.

Michael Campbell evened the score with a solo homer in the bottom of the fourth. Campbell parked a 2-0 pitch over the right field fence for his third homer this year.

Three runs crossed in the fifth inning to account for the difference. Mike Victor led off with a single and was sacrificed to second. Jorge Araiza dropped a single to right to put runners at the corners. Brandon McArthur drove in the winning run with an infield single and Brad Miller plated Araiza with a single to center on a 3-2 pitch from Lake Erie starter Brent Lysander, who was hit with his second loss after failing to escape the frame. The final run scored on a delayed steal of home.

David Dinelli tossed five innings to notch his third win of the season while Ryan Kruszka completed the sixth and David Hurst the seventh to pick up his fifth save. Five different players posted hits.

The Beach Bums open a series with the Midwest Sliders of Ypsilanti at Wuerfel Park tomorrow night with a 7:05pm contest. RHP Jason Kiley (6-8, 5.00) is the scheduled starter for the Beach Bums opposite former Traverse City hurler RHP Jon Haldis (3-3, 4.37). The contest will feature a pregame book signing with author Kurt David in addition to a baseball bat pen giveaway.
