Florence Y'alls News Release
(Florence, KY) - Peter Gehle (4-5) went seven and a third innings of two-run ball; Rolando Gomez homered and drove in two runs, and the Florence Freedom (34-44) knocked off the Joliet Slammers (30-50) by a final score of 6-2 Saturday night at UC Health Stadium.
Florence took the lead in the first against Joliet starter John Maloney (0-1) and never trailed in the win. Cole Miles and Zak Blair smacked back-to-back singles to start the inning. Sam Eberle walked and one out later Rob Kelly delivered a two-RBI single to right as Florence took a 2-0 lead.
Joliet got one back in the third on a Grant DeBruin RBI fielder's choice but Florence would strike back in the bottom of the third inning. Blair got things rolling with a single and Eberle drew another walk. Two outs later Chance Ross singled home Blair to extend the lead to 3-1. Adam Taylor followed with a RBI single of his own and Florence owned a 4-1 advantage.
A RBI grounder cut the Freedom lead to 4-2 in the fourth but that was as close as Joliet got in the game. In the bottom of the fourth Gomez went yard for his first long ball of the year. He added a sacrifice fly in the sixth to extend the lead to 6-2.
Gehle picked up the win by going seven and a third innings, scattering seven hits, allowing only two runs, walking two and striking out one.
With the win the Freedom secure their third consecutive series victory. They go for the sweep Sunday at 5:05 p.m. eastern time as Jorge Marban (4-4, 3.70 ERA) takes the hill for his second professional start.
Giovani Bernard will be at Sunday's Freedom game and one fan can purchase the right to catch his first pitch with all proceeds going to the Run Gio Foundation. Details are here.
