Traverse City Beach Bums News Release
TRAVERSE CITY, MI - The Lake Erie Crushers put up a pair of three-run innings in their first four at-bats and used a strong bullpen to hold down the Traverse City Beach Bums 6-3 on Saturday night at Wuerfel Park.
Facing Traverse City's All-Star Casey Delgado, the Crushers posted three consecutive two-out RBI singles from Anderson Hidalgo, Vincent Mejia, and Joey Burney in the top of the first inning to open up a 3-0 lead. Traverse City got a run back on a balk in the bottom of the second but saw Lake Erie post three more runs in the fourth inning to take a 6-1 lead.
The Beach Bums got back into the game with a two-out rally in the bottom of the fourth. Jovan Rosa poked a single up the middle and moved to second on a walk before scoring on a Scott Woodward RBI single. Woodward then stole second base with the throw skipping into center field, allowing Kevin Taylor to score from third, making it 6-3 after four.
Both pitching staffs settled down after the fourth with Delgado, Chuck Ghysels and Will Rankin yielding just one hit and a walk in the final five innings for Traverse City. But Lake Erie's bullpen was just as good, holding the Beach Bums to just three hits before TC put two on in the ninth inning to bring the tying run to the plate. Trevor Longfellow complete his seventh save, though, by getting Woodward and Josh Miller to groundout.
Delgado (6-5) ended up pitching six innings for the Beach Bums, allowing six runs, five earned, on nine hits while striking out eight. Zach Gordon (3-3) started for Lake Erie and gave up three runs, two earned, on two hits in five frames to pick up the victory.
Traverse City and Lake Erie finish the three-game series on Sunday at 5:05 p.m. Scott Vachon (2-1, 4.94) is scheduled to throw for the Beach Bums while the Crushers will go with Zac Treece (4-3, 3.43). It's Family FUNday Sunday at Wuefel Park with discounted kids tickets, postgame kids run the bases, autographs, and poster giveaway. Also, one lucky fan will win a ski and stay giveaway to Shanty Creek Resort. Fans can listen to the broadcast starting at 4:45 p.m. on Classic Rock the Bear 98.1/107.1 and classicrockthebear.com.
