Rascals Rain On Miners' Parade
August 16, 2014 - Frontier League (FL)
River City Rascals News Release
It was a wet one in O'Fallon on Friday night. Rain caused a delay and then eventually ended the game after just six innings. The Rascals waited until the last minute, but thanks to a late homerun by Hector Crespo, they were able to emerge victorious, 1-0.
Kyle Brady took to the mound for the Rascals and was superb. He allowed nothing more than a walk and faced the minimum in his first three innings of work. The tall righty mowed down the Miners all night, allowing just two hits in 5 2/3 innings of work.
Anthony Montefusco went to the hill for Southern Illinois. He wasn't quite as good as Brady, but received plenty of support from his defense to keep the Rascals off the board. Catcher Phil Butler caught Johnny Morales stealing to end the first and 3B Niko Vasquez helped start a double play on a line drive off the bat of Jon Myers to end the second. The Miners would turn two double plays in the game in support of their starter and help him throw five innings of eight-hit shutout ball.
The Rascals turned quite the defensive trick themselves in the fourth. With two outs in that inning, Frank Martinez laced a double into the right field corner that sent Ryan Cavin, who was on first, sprinting from first toward home. Jon Myers took the ball off the base of the right field monster and relayed it to Brian McConkey who went to catcher Joe Staley to catch Cavin at the plate and keep it a 0-0 game.
Play was suspended in the fifth for approximately fifteen minutes due to rain with the Miners threatening. Matt Howard was at the plate with men on the corners when the umpiring crew made the call to pause play. When it picked back up, Brady got Howard to line to center to keep the shutout intact.
The showers would hold off through the sixth. In the bottom of that inning, Hector Crespo smacked his fourth homerun in as many games to left center off reliever Britt Robertshaw. The solo blast came with two outs and would prove to be the difference. Shortly after he went deep, the rain picked back up. Play would not resume.
It was the forty-seventh win of the year for the Rascals. Game #2 in their three-game set with the Miners is scheduled for 7:05 pm Saturday at TR Hughes. Tim Koons will go to the mound for the Raskies in that one. Tickets are still available for all upcoming Rascals home games.
