(Marion, IL) - The Southern Illinois Miners (52-35) hit two home runs on their way to an 8-4 defeat of the Florence Freedom (39-48) Sunday night.
The Miners took an early lead in the first as Jay Austin led off the frame with a double. Two outs later Frank Martinez reached on an error as the Miners went ahead 1-0.
A Ryan Solberg double plus an error my Southern Illinois left fielder Marquis Riley allowed Zak Blair to score to tie the game at one in the third.
But the Miners grabbed the lead off Chuck Weaver (6-6) for good in the fourth. Martinez doubled to start the frame. One out later Chris Burke doubled him home. Then with two away Steve Marino launched a two-run home run to extend the lead to 4-1.
Florence made things interesting in the eighth as Buddy Sosnoskie singled to lead-off the inning. Two outs later Blair singled him home to cut the Miners' lead to 4-2. The hit finally chased Matt Bywater (7-4) from the game as the left-hander went seven and two thirds innings, only allowing four hits. Ryan Solberg drew a walk and Sam Eberle singled home Blair to make the score 4-3.
But the Miners brought in their closer Derrick Miramontes who struck out Jacob Tanis to end the inning.
The Miners chased Weaver from the game in the bottom of the eighth and tallied four runs to pull away from the Freedom. Austin doubled and moved to third on a wild pitch. One out later Niko Vasquez singled home an insurance run to make it 5-3. Ed Kohout entered the game and walked Frank Martinez. That's when Aaron Gates smacked a three-run home run to put the Miners up 8-3.
Florence tallied one in the ninth on a Rob Kelly RBI single but it wasn't enough as their series winning streak was snapped at four.
