Last time out...
The Freedom fell 11-4 on Saturday. The Miners scored two runs in the first. Jay Austin doubled to start the frame and advanced to third on a ground-out. Frank Martinez drove Austin in with a sacrifice fly. Three more walks forced a run across the plate and Southern Illinois lead 2-0. Jorge Marban (4-5) surrendered three runs in the third. Vasquez homered to start the inning. Martinez reached on an error and Aaron Gates followed with a single. Chris Burke walked and Steve Marino doubled in two runs to make it 5-0 Miners. Michael O'Neal entered the game and allowed six runs in the fifth inning, including two more home runs for the Miners. The Freedom scored one run in the sixth as Sam Eberle drew a bases-loaded walk. They added another run in the seventh on a Chance Ross two-out RBI single. Florence tallied two more runs in the eighth on a RBI double by Eberle and a RBI single by Jacob Tanis.
For Starters...
2014 Frontier League Mid-Season All-Star Chuck Weaver is making his 16th start of the season tonight for the Freedom. He has won two consecutive starts, most recently a 5-4 victory over Windy City on August 19 as Weaver went seven innings, scattering 10 hits, allowing three runs, walking one and striking out three. Weaver beat Southern Illinois on June 14 as he went eight innings, allowing only one run (which was unearned) on four hits, walking one and striking out seven. Weaver was signed by the Freedom in June 2013 after he finished up his collegiate career at IPFW. He had a solid rookie season, posting a 4-2 record with a 3.70 ERA in 14 appearances, 12 starts. The Ft. Wayne, Ind. native started 13 games as a senior for the Mastadons, posting a 2-5 with a 3.57 ERA. Weaver threw two complete games as a senior and pitched 70.2 innings. He played two years for IPFW after transferring from Vincennes University where he was named to the NJCAA All-Academic team.
Rubber match...
Tonight is the rubber match of the three-game series between the Miners and the Freedom. The Freedom have a record of 5-8 in rubber matches but they also have a record of 14-13 in series finales.
Clutch...
Sam Eberle (.363) and Cole Miles (.362) lead the Freedom in batting average with runners in scoring position. Overall the Freedom hit .243 when runners in scoring position.
Going for the series win...
With a win tonight the Freedom would win their fifth consecutive series and their second straight on the road. They took two of three from the Beach Bums in Traverse City August 13-14 for their first road series win of the season.

With former closer Jorge Marban moving into the rotation, RHP Ed Kohout has picked up six saves in the month of August. The bullpen is 8 for 8 in save opportunities this month.
