Traverse City Beach Bums News Release
NORMAL, IL - Aaron Dudley hit a two-run home run of the last sixth inning that provided the difference for the Normal CornBelters in a 4-3 win over the Traverse City Beach Bums on Sunday night at The Corn Crib.
Dudley's two-run jack put Normal back on top after Traverse City had dug itself out of a 2-0 hole. The CornBelters got a pair of runs in the first inning on a Mike Schwartz RBI single and then a sacrifice fly from Sam Judah to take the early lead.
TC got a run back in the top of the second thanks to a pair of errors on the third baseman. Jovan Rosa reached on the first error, moved to second on a single and scored on another error to the cut the lead to 2-1. An inning later, three straight two-out singles plated another run for the Beach Bums with Jose Vargas' RBI single scoring Scott Woodward.
Another miscue in the top of the sixth inning gave Traverse City the lead. With runners at second and third, Jeff DeBlieux blooped a ball into center field that Jhiomar Veras dropped, allowing Chris Cowell to scamper home with the go-ahead tally.
However, Schwartz led off the sixth with a ground rule double and Dudley blasted his 13 th homer two batters later to put the CornBelters back on top for good.
The Beach Bums had opportunities to tie the game or take the lead in the final three frames, but never could push it across. Yazy Arbelo led off the ninth with a walk and was pinch-ran for by Greg Harisis. He stole second and moved to third on a throwing error with nobody out, but Eric Anderson got two strikeouts and a groundout to pick up his fifth save of the year.
Scott Vachon (2-3) started for Traverse City and took the loss, allowing all four runs, three earned, on nine base hits in 5.2 innings. Cullen Babin started for the CornBelters, but didn't factor in the decision after allowing three runs, two earned, on 10 hits in 5.1 innings. Stephen Frey (1-1) earned the win with a scoreless inning of relief.
Traverse City now returns home for the final homestand of the year starting on Tuesday against the Southern Illinois Miners. Tanner Tripp (2-8, 4.55) will start for the Beach Bums against the Miners' Michael Carden (5-3, 3.15). In addition to the typical Two-for-Tuesday promotion, one lucky fan will win a seven-day trip for two to Punta Cana courtesy of Passageways Travel and TVC Airport. Fans can listen to the broadcast starting at 6:45 p.m. on Classic Rock the Bear 98.1/107.1 and classicrockthebear.com.
