Slammers Sweep Windy City on Sunday

The Joliet Slammers-Presented by ATI Physical Therapy-swept a doubleheader from Windy City on Sunday 3-1 and 5-0.

In game one, Windy City scored a run in the bottom of the 1st off of Joliet starter Matt Costello. Former Lewis Flyers outfielder, Andrew Brauer, singled to start the game and scored on a sacrifice fly from Max White. The Slammers came back with a pair runs in the top of the 2nd off Windy City starter Eli Anderson to take a 2-1 lead. Anderson, from NIU and New Trier H.S. ending up being charged with the loss. Seth Granger started off the 2nd inning rally with a one out double and moved to third base on a Josh Scheffert infield single. Granger scored when Max Casper laid down a bunt on a safety squeeze. Anderson fielded the bunt but threw wildly to the plate for the error. Scheffert then scored on an Adam Lewis sacrifice fly. Joliet made it 3-1 on a solo home run from Adrian English in the 6th inning. Costello earned the Joliet win going six innings and giving up just one run on four hits with three strikeouts and no walks. David Kubiak came on in the the 7th and earned his 5th save of the season.

In game two, Joliet took an early 2-0 lead on a Max Casper 2-run double in the 2nd inning. Andrew Busby started for the Slammers and pitched very well. Grant DeBruin put the game out of reach in the 5th with a long 3-run homer. After a pair of hits in game one, DeBruin now has a league-leading 120 hits on the season. Busby went the first five innings for the victory. He allowed no runs on four hits with two strikeouts and one walk. At one point he retired nine men in a row. John Maloney pitched the final two innings and struck out four to close out the 5-0 victory. It was the first doubleheader sweep of the season for the Slammers and their first sweep of a series since taking three straight from River City ending on June 8th.The 5-0 score is also just the third shutout victory of the season for Joliet. The Slammers win the 9-game season series vs. Windy City 5-4.

Joliet returns home for their season-ending nine-game home-stand beginning with a 2-dollar Tuesday on August 26th. Awareness Wednesday will be followed by a Thirsty Thursday that will also be JackHammers Night. So break out your old Joliet JackHammers gear and celebrate the beginnings of Pro Baseball in Joliet.
