NORMAL, Ill. - The Normal CornBelters, presented by Illinois Corn Farmers, completed a sweep of the Traverse City Beach Bums with a 4-3 win on Sunday night at the Corn Crib.
The CornBelters struck quickly in the opening frame by putting the first three hitters on base with a double by Pat McKenna and singles by Santiago Chirino and Mike Schwartz for an RBI. Chirino came home on a sacrifice fly to center field by Sam Judah for an early 2-0 advantage.
The Beach Bums picked up a run in their second inning thanks to a hit and two errors to cut the deficit to 2-1. The guests tied the game at 2-2 with three straight two-out hits in the third inning as Jose Vargas collected the RBI, then grabbed a 3-2 lead in the sixth on another unearned run that scored on a dropped pop-up to shallow center field.
The Belters regained the lead right away in their sixth with a two-run homer to the right field berm by Aaron Dudley to surge ahead 4-3. The Beach Bums stranded a runner at third base in each of the final three innings.
Stephen Frey (1-1) worked one relief inning to take the win. Beach Bums starter Scott Vachon (2-3) took the loss. Eric Anderson pitched the ninth for his fifth save.
