Traverse City Beach Bums News Release

TRAVERSE CITY, MI - The Traverse City Beach Bums hit three homeruns including a pair of two-run blasts in the fourth inning as the Beach Bums topped the Gateway Grizzlies 6-1.

Traverse City got things started in the second inning when Chase Burch went deep for the second straight night, knocking out his 17th of the season for a 1-0 TC lead.

The fourth is where the Beach Bums put the game away. Leading off the frame, Jose Vargas doubled. After a deep fly out by Burch to rightfield moved Vargas to third, Jeff Flagg singled home the Traverse City third baseman to make it 2-0. Kyle Colligan came up and cleared the bases with a shot off the scoreboard to make it 4-0. Two batters later, Marcus Nidiffer kept the inning going with a double. That sent Kyle Eveland to the plate. After working a 2-0 count, Eveland hit a towering shot down the leftfield line that stayed fair for a two-run bomb of his own and a 6-0 Beach Bums advantage.

Gateway would get their lone run of the game in the fifth when Landon Hernandez doubled, moved up to third on a groundout and scored on a John Shelby sac fly.

Meanwhile, on the mound, Kurt Wunderlich (3-0) cruised through the first five innings, allowing the Grizzlies one run on four hits. The right-hander ran into some sixth inning trouble and Traverse City called upon Jake Sabol who finished the game with 3.1 shutout innings to notch his first save.

It was also a historic save as it marked the 35th time this season a Beach Bums reliever has preserved a lead, setting a Frontier League saves record, eclipsing the mark of 34 set by the 2005 Washington Wild Things and the 2011 River City Rascals and Joliet Slammers.
