Last time out...
Joliet lost 12-4 last night. With one out in the second David Christensen singled and Kyle Maunus blasted his ninth home run of the season to put the Slammers up 2-0. Abel Nieves crushed a pitch over the batter's eye in dead center field in the third to extend the lead to 3-0. AJ Nunziato hit a home run to start the fourth inning. Gus Benusa followed with a triple and Mark Samuelson hit a RBI grounder. Rick Devereaux homered and the game was tied at three. They took the lead over Joliet in the fifth on a Brad Agustin home run off Jacob Sanchez. One out later Andrew Heck singled. He stole second and scored on a Mark Samuelson single with two away. Mike Barsotti entered in the sixth and gave up a couple of runs on a Heck two-RBI single. Trailing 7-3 entering the seventh, things unraveled for Joliet as Washington scored five runs with two outs. The big hit was a bases clearing double from Jovan Rosa.
For Starters...
Tommy Mendoza is coming off a tough loss on August 23 to the Florence Freedom. He went eight innings and gave up five runs (three earned) while walking three and striking out a personal best with the Slammers nine batters. The eight innings were the longest he's gone in a start with Joliet. He's looking for his first win on the road since June 14 against the River City Rascals. Mendoza struggled in his only start against Washington this year, going three innings, and giving up five runs (three earned) on four hits. Mendoza made his first start for the Slammers on June 27, 2011 and went on to post a 6-2 record during the regular season. He won both his starts in the playoffs while posting a 1.50 ERA. Mendoza was a 5th round draft pick of the Angels in 2005. He has a career ERA of 3.97 over six seasons in affiliated baseball. The right-handed pitcher rose to the Triple-A level at the age of 21 in 2009. He was 7-7 with a 3.36 ERA for Double-A Arkansas and was named a Texas League All Star before earning the promotion to Salt Lake. With the Bees he went 2-1 with a 2.91 ERA. Mendoza suffered from multiple injuries in 2010 which only allowed him to pitch in 10 games.
First two innings...
The Slammers are out-scoring opponents 95-85 in the first two innings. They are being out-scored 385-272 in all other innings.
Movin' on up!
Rookie left-hander Geoff Brown was signed by the Dodgers on Monday. He becomes the third Slammer signed by the Dodgers in recent weeks as he joins RHP Amalio Diaz and RHP Daniel Carela in LA's system. Brown is the seventh Slammer signed to affiliated ball in team history. Brown leaves the Frontier League as the league-leader in appearances this year with 44. He finished with a 3.67 ERA in 41.2 innings with 46 strike outs.
Mr. RBI...
Erik Lis leads the Slammers with 45 RBI on the season.
Team hitting slump...
The Slammers are only hitting .213 as a team over the past 10 games.
Losing streaks...
The Slammers are currently on a 12-game losing streak, the longest losing streak in franchise history. Joliet is also on a seven-game road losing streak, their longest ever on the road. They are currently a franchise worst 20 games under the .500 mark.
Walk this way...
Abel Nieves has drawn a team-leading 52 walks this season, good for a tie for sixth in the Frontier League. Even more impressively, he's the only active Slammers player to record more walks than strike outs this season as he has only fanned 38 times in 308 at bats.
Error indicator...
Joliet is 11-42 in games when they make an error. They are 24-13 in games when they do not.
