Guelph Storm News Release

For the first time in the last six games, the Guelph Storm fell in regulation.

Those responsible? The Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds and four unanswered goals.

After Garrett McFadden opened the scoring with his 14th point in the last 14 games played, the Greyhounds responded with four straight goals - two of which came in the final five minutes of the third period.

Bradley van Schubert was solid in the paint for the Storm, turning aside 30 of 34 shots on the night, including several big saves to keep the game tied in the first period and half of the second, while later keeping his team within one in high pressure situations in the final period.

For the Greyhounds, Brandon Halverson made 21 of 22 saves in the win.

The Storm came out of the gates quickly with a noticeable physical presence, putting lots of pressure on the Greyhounds defence. Trying to find a response, the Soo's Conor Timmins ended up taking the game's first penalty with a delay-of-game call at the 7:42 point.

On the advantage, defenseman Garrett McFadden put a hard wrist shot towards the Greyhounds' net as Givani Smith was creating all kinds of trouble in front with a screen, giving the Storm a 1-0 lead with 8:37 played in the first.

From there, the Greyhounds picked up their play, creating more pressure around Van Schubert, keeping the sophomore busy with nine shots on the frame. Responding on the scoreboard almost five minutes later, the Soo found a way to beat the Storm netminder with an even strength tally. Morgan Frost, on the Greyhounds' seventh shot on net, scored his third of the season to knot things up at one.

Both teams struggled to get much of anything going through the majority of the second period, looking to regain the quick flow of the opening 20 minutes.

With just over five minutes remaining in the period, Boris Katchouk received a roughing minor, giving the Storm their third power play of the game. Creating strong pressure with a few good scoring chances, including Givani Smith hanging around the backdoor but unable to put everything behind the shot, the Storm came up short of capitalizing on the man-advantage for the second time in the match-up.

Successfully killing the penalty saw momentum swing in favour of the home squad as Katchouk was almost sprung coming out of the penalty box. The play created quick offensive pressure for the Greyhounds, forcing the Storm to lose structure in the defensive zone, resulting in Tyler Hore capitalizing for his second of the season off a nice feed from Katchouk with just over three minutes remaining in the period.

The Greyhounds kept things going in the final frame, successfully killing off two penalties while pushing for a shorthanded insurance marker in the process. On the period's first man-advantage for the Storm, with Katchouk in the box for hooking, the puck - going off a body - bounced out to Blake Speers sprung for a shorthanded break. Van Schubert denied the chance with a solid pad save, keeping his team within one.

The Soo made it 1/4 on the penalty kill, getting through a tripping minor called to Speers just three minutes later.

From there, the Greyhounds turned on the offensive, extending their lead to two as Jack Kopacka scored his 11th of the season with 4:11 remaining in the game.

Adding an extra cushion, Tim Gettinger found the back of the net just under a minute later, making it a 4-1 final for the home team.

The Storm are back in action on Sunday afternoon, closing out the northern road trip visiting the Sudbury Wolves.
