Spirit and Frontenacs Meet Friday Night
January 22, 2016 - Ontario Hockey League (OHL)
Saginaw Spirit News Release
KINGSTON, ON - On Friday, the Saginaw Spirit (18-22-2-2 40 points, 4th West Division) take on the Kingston Frontenacs (27-13-2-1 57 points, 1st East Division) at the Rogers K-Rock Centre in Kingston, Ontario. The puck drops at 7:00pm.
The Spirit dropped a 3-1 heartbreaker to the Peterborough Petes on Thursday night, after a firing a season-high 49 shots at Petes goaltender Michael Mancina. Rookie Cole Coskey was the only Spirit player to solve the Petes goaltender in the second period. The Petes scored twice in the period to take a 3-1 lead, and rode the play of Mancina the rest of the way to thwart the Spirit's offensive efforts.
The Fronts come into play tonight, leading the OHL's Eastern Conference with a 27-13-2-1 record. Kingston dropped a 4-2 decision to Mississauga on last Sunday afternoon, but previous to that, had won six of their last seven contests. Kingston is lead offensively by Los Angeles Kings prospect Spencer Watson (20G-26A-46PTS), deadline acquisition Michael Dal Colle (15G-24A-39PTS), and Florida Panthers first round pick in 2015 Lawson Crouse (10G-18A-28PTS). On the back end, Kingston has two offensively gifted rear guards Roland McKeown (6G-24A-30PTS) and Stephen Desrocher (3G-12A-15PTS). In net is overager Lucas Peressini, who is currently seventh in the league in goaltending, posting an 18-11-2-1 record with a 2.66 goals against average and a .913 save percentage.
Head-to-Head:
This is the first of two meetings this season between the out of conference foes, but historically the matchup is well in favor of the Saginaw Spirit. The Spirit swept last season's series with the Fronts, winning 5-2 at The Dow Event Center on November 2nd, 2014, and 3-1 at the Rogers K-Rock Centre on February 22nd, 2015. In the last five seasons, the Spirit are 6-1-0-1 against the Frontenacs.
