
Four Sea Dogs Named to Eastern League All-Star Team

Portland, Maine- The Eastern League has announced the rosters for the 2004 Eastern League All-Star team. The Portland Sea Dogs will have four players headed to the mid-summer classic; pitcher Abe Alvarez along with position players Jeff Bailey, Kenny Perez and Brett Roneberg. The 2004 Eastern League All-Star game will be played in Bowie, Maryland on Wednesday, July 14th at 7:05pm. The game will feature the Northern Division All-Stars against the Southern Division All-Stars. The Sea Dogs will play for the Northern Division squad.
The All-Star teams were selected through Rite Aid fan balloting along with selections from media personnel, club field personnel, and Eastern League administrators. Each one of the 12 Eastern League teams has at least three players including at least one pitcher and one position player. The Bowie Baysox have the most representatives with six. Alvarez and Roneberg were selected by the fans, while Bailey and Perez were selected by media, league officials, and team personnel.
Abe Alvarez, a 21-year-old left-handed pitcher from Fontana, CA was selected by the Red Sox in the second round (49th overall) in the 2003 draft. He is ranked as the # 7 prospect in the Red Sox organization according to Baseball America. Alvarez has made the jump to Double-A ball in 2004 after pitching just 19 innings of professional ball at Single-A Lowell in 2003. With the Sea Dogs in 2004 Alvarez is 6-5 with a 3.76 ERA.
Jeff Bailey, a 25-year-old catcher/ outfielder, from Kelso, WA, is in his first season with the Boston Red Sox organization. Bailey was a second round draft pick of the Florida Marlins in 1997 and played for the Sea Dogs in 2001 when the team was affiliated with the Marlins. Bailey currently has a 10 game hitting streak and is hitting .316 with 11 home runs and 43 RBI on the season. His .316 batting average is 7th in the league. He is second in the league in on base percentage (.437) and fifth in the league in slugging percentage (.575).
Kenny Perez, a 22 year-old shortstop from Miami, FL was drafted by the Red Sox in the 6th round of the 2000 draft. Perez is hitting .299 with 2 home runs and 31 RBI on the season. His 19 doubles are a team high and ninth in the league.
Brett Roneberg, 25, from Cairns, Australia is an outfielder in his first season with the Boston Red Sox organization. Roneberg was originally signed as a non-drafted free agent by the Florida Marlins in 1996. He too was a member of the Portland Sea Dogs in 2001 when the team was a Marlins affiliate. Roneberg had an 18 game hitting streak from April 27-May 15; it is the second longest streak in the league this season. On the season he is hitting .299 with 12 home runs and 50 RBI. Roneberg is among the league leaders in several offensive categories including sixth in the league in RBI (50), 10th in the league in hits (84) and 10th in the league in extra base hits (32).

The Portland Sea Dogs are currently in the midst of a seven game homestand that runs through Sunday, July 4th. The Sea Dogs conclude a three game series tonight with the Norwich Navigators (Giants) at 7:00 PM. On Thursday, the Akron Aeros (Indians) come to town for a four game series.
