Columbus Clippers News Release
Down 4-0 entering the sixth inning and trailing 4-3 down to their last strike in the ninth, Columbus (31-24) battled back to snatch a win from the jaws of defeat over Scranton/Wilkes-Barre (31-25) by a final score of 7-5 on Saturday afternoon at PNC Field in front of 7,738 fans.
The RailRiders picked up right where they left off in last night's 10-3 win over the Clippers in the bottom of the first inning.
Back-to-back doubles from Ben Gamel and Aaron Judge put Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on the board. Judge was brought home from third later in the frame on a sacrifice fly by Donovan Solano to extend the RailRiders lead to two.
Scranton/Wilkes-Barre first baseman Tyler Austin took a trip over the right field wall in the next inning, making it a 3-0 game and Kyle Higashioka's solo shot to lead off the fourth pushed the RailRiders lead to four.
Columbus starter in right-hander Mike Clevinger was pulled before the fourth inning came to a close. He went three and 2/3 innings, responsible for the four earned runs on five hits while walking three batters and striking out five.
After being mowed down for five innings, the Clippers offense came to life with two outs in the sixth, as a Jesus Aguilar RBI double, a Yandy Diaz RBI single and an Adam Moore RBI double cut the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre lead to 4-3.
That chased RailRiders starter in righty Brady Lail, who went five and 2/3 innings, allowing three earned runs on six hits. He walked one and fanned three.
The ninth inning saw Columbus punch home four runs, as Erik Gonzalez's two-run single to right and Giovanny Urshela's two-run double ultimately gave the Clippers the win.
Will Roberts (5-2) was given the win for Columbus in working four and 2/3 innings of relief while James Pazos (2-2) was dealt the loss as he blew the save in the ninth.
Ben Heller picked up his second save of the campaign, getting the last out in the RailRiders ninth.
The Clippers wrap up their two city, seven game road trip, as well as their four game series with the RailRiders tomorrow afternoon with the first pitch scheduled for 1:05 p.m. Southpaw Ryan Merritt (3-4, 2.94 ERA) is slated to start for Columbus against Phil Coke (3-0, 0.51 ERA) for Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.
Don't forget Clippers fans, the hometown heroes return home on Monday night to take on Indianapolis at 7:05 p.m. at Huntington Park. It is another Dime-A-Dog night at the ballpark presented by Sugardale! Hot dogs are just 10 cents all night long!
