
Coats Promoted to Chicago Today, Kahnle Optioned to Charlotte

(UPTOWN CHARLOTTE, NC) -- OF Jason Coats, who was leading the International League with a .335 batting average, had his contract purchased by the Chicago White Sox today. In one other move to announce, RHP Tommy Kahnle was optioned to Charlotte after their game on Friday night. Kahnle will re-join the Charlotte Knights today. Charlotte's roster now consists of 24 active players.
Coats, a native of Dallas, TX becomes the 11th player promoted to the Chicago White Sox this season. RHP Erik Johnson (April 19, May 5 & May 23), catcher Kevan Smith (April 24), RHP Miguel Gonzalez (April 25 & May 9), catcher Hector Sanchez (April 26), RHP Daniel Webb (April 27), infielder Carlos Sanchez (April 28), RHP Tommy Kahnle (April 29, May 5, May 23 & June 3), RHP Scott Carroll (May 6), LHP Matt Purke (May 13), and OF J.B. Shuck (May 30), are the others who have been promoted to the White Sox this year.
In 43 games with the Charlotte Knights this season, Coats is hitting .335 (55-for-164) with 26 runs scored, 13 doubles, two triples, seven home runs, and 24 RBIs. The 26-year-old was in the midst of a seven game hit streak at the time of today's promotion. In 21 games at BB&T Ballpark this season, Coats was hitting .366 (30-for-82) with 14 runs scored, six doubles, two triples, four home runs, and 13 RBIs.
Selected in the 29th round of the June 2012 First-Year Player Draft by the Chicago White Sox, Coats is a career .284 (486-for-1,713) hitter over four seasons at the minor league level. Last season with the Knights, Coats appeared in 122 games after being promoted from Double-A Birmingham and hit .270 (132-for-489) with 17 home runs and 81 RBIs. A product of Texas Christian University (TCU), Coats ranked among the White Sox organizational leaders last season in doubles (38), RBIs (83), total bases (239), and extra-base hits (56).
Kahnle returns to the Knights after being recalled by the club on Friday and being optioned after their game. In four stints with the White Sox this season, Kahnle is 0-2 with a 6.23 ERA. The Latham, NY native has appeared in 14 games with the Knights this year and is 1-0 with three saves and a 2.60 ERA.
The Knights will continue their four-game series against the Lehigh Valley IronPigs tonight at 6:05 p.m. from BB&T Ballpark. Gates open at 5:00 p.m. tonight.
