Pawtucket Red Sox News Release
(Norfolk, VA) - Eleven different Pawtucket Red Sox players collected a hit, leading the offense to a late-game outburst in an 11-6 victory over the Norfolk Tides on Saturday night at Harbor Park.
The PawSox (27-28) used a true team effort to score nine runs on 10 hits in the game's final three innings. In addition to every batter collecting a hit in the game, nine different Pawtucket players scored a run and eight delivered an RBI.
Pawtucket rallied for four runs in the seventh and five in the ninth, capped off by Dan Butler's three-run home run (1).
Yet, despite holding an 11-2 lead heading to the bottom of the ninth, the PawSox had to sweat out a four-run Tides rally, as Norfolk (19-37) had the potential tying run in the on-deck circle when the game concluded.
With the win, the PawSox clinched a season-series win over the Tides for the first time since 2008. Pawtucket has knocked off Norfolk in four of six games this season with the final meeting coming tomorrow afternoon.
Sean O'Sullivan (3-2), making his first start in two weeks, earned the win for the PawSox. He did not allow a run until two outs in the seventh inning, surrendering only a pair of runs in his seven-inning outing.
The PawSox jumped on the scoreboard in the second inning with a pair of two-out hits against Norfolk starter Nick Addition (1-5). Sandy Leon singled and scored on Jantzen Witte's two-out double that sailed through the wind and off the left field wall.
The Tides attempted to tie the game in the bottom of the third inning when Mike Yastrzemski sent a double into left field against O'Sullivan with Michael Almanzar on first.
However, the left fielder Bryce Brentz made a nice play to retrieve the ball and fire a strike to the cutoff man, Deven Marrero. Marrero executed an accurate relay throw to the plate and Butler tagged out Almanzar to maintain Pawtucket's 1-0 edge.
In the following half inning, Brentz lined a leadoff single to right, advanced to third base on Chris Marrero's single to center and scored on Chris Dominguez's sacrifice fly.
The big seventh-inning rally came against Norfolk reliever Ashur Tolliver.
Two singles and a walk loaded the bases with no outs for Jose Vinicio. He delivered an RBI in his third straight game with an infield single that slowly trickled past the mound towards the right side of the infield.
Justin Maxwell's RBI fielder's choice and Ryan LaMarre's sacrifice fly extended the lead to 5-0. Brentz completed the four-run frame with an RBI double to right.
The Tides responded with four hits in the seventh off of O'Sullivan to cut the lead to 6-2.
The five-run ninth for the PawSox featured an RBI double from Chris Marrero, RBI single from Chris Dominguez and then Butler's blast.
Butler entered the game with Justin Maxwell as defensive replacements in the third inning and both players scored two runs in the contest.
Kyle Martin tossed a scoreless eighth inning for Pawtucket, extending the bullpen's scoreless streak to 14.2 innings. But Martin hit a roadblock in the bottom of the ninth.
Martin walked four batters in his outing, more than the number of base-on-balls he had previously issued all season (in 26.1 innings pitched). He surrendered three walks, two singles and a hit-batter before Wesley Wright entered the game to try and record the final out.
After walking in a run with the bases loaded, Wright induced a groundball to third base off the bat of Ozzie Martinez to close out the 11-6 win.
The PawSox play the finale of both their road trip and four-game series with the Tides tomorrow evening at 1:05 p.m. Pawtucket lefthander Roenis Elias (2-3, 4.60) is scheduled to face off with Norfolk righty David Hale (0-2, 5.40). Radio coverage on WHJJ (920 AM) and throughout the PawSox radio network begins at 12:35 p.m.
Pawtucket returns to McCoy Stadium on Monday for a seven-game homestand against Toledo and Louisville. Good seats for all the games are still available at the McCoy Stadium box office, by calling (401) 724-7300 or by visiting pawsox.com.
