Binghamton Rumble Ponies News Release
BRIDGEWATER, NJ - The Binghamton Rumble Ponies (11-10) scored four runs in the first inning and went on to defeat the Somerset Patriots 5-1 on Wednesday night at TD Bank Ballpark. Dom Hamel (1-2) earned his first win of the year as he allowed one run on five hits over a season-long five innings with no walks and a season-high eight strikeouts.
In the first, Matt Rudick was Binghamton's first baserunner after singling to center against Richard Fitts (1-3). Two batters later, with two out, Dariel Gomez hit a double down the left-field line that scored Rudick to put the Ponies on the board. The next batter Brandon McIlwain drove home Gomez with an RBI single to right to make it 2-0. Agustin Ruiz came up next and belted a two-run homer off the videoboard in right to double the Ponies lead to 4-0. It's Ruiz first home run of the season.
Hamel would allow one run in the fifth on an Eric Wagaman solo homer. He would end his outing with a strikeout of Jasson Domínguez. Hamel has now lowered his ERA to 2.18 for the season over five starts.
The Ponies bullpen was in command as Marcel Rentería pitched two scoreless frames and Dylan Hall closed the game out with two innings of scoreless work. Hall has not allowed a run in six appearances with the Rumble Ponies this season.
The two teams have now split the first two games of the series. The Rumble Ponies continue the Double-A Subway Series with the Patriots (13-9) on Thursday night with first pitch at 6:35 PM and the NYCM Insurance Pregame Show starting at 6:20 PM.
Postgame Notes: Gomez finished 2-3 with a run scored, RBI, and a walk...Binghamton is now 4-4 against Somerset this season...Hayden Senger had a multi-hit game.
