Charleston Dirty Birds News Release
The West Virginia Power opened a nine game home stand with a 4-3 win over the Delmarva Shorebirds on Monday night. The Power tallied four runs in the first at Appalachian Power Park and needed just two pitchers make the lead stand for the victory.
The first five West Virginia batters reached on base hits, including run-scoring doubles by Jarek Cunningham and Aaron Baker. Jose Hernandez and Jesus Brito added run scoring base hits to build the 4-0 edge. West Virginia sent all nine batters to the plate in the inning against Shorebirds starter Kenny Moreland and managed six of their ten total hits Monday night in the first frame.
Jason Erickson pitched six solid innings in his fourth quality start of the season. Delmarva plated all three of its runs in the fifth inning against the Power starter, keyed by a two out double by T.J. Baxter that brought home the first two Shorebirds runs. Tyler Kelly reached on an error, and Cunningham's throw to the plate was errant as well to allow the third run of the inning to score.
Erickson (6-5) gained the win, while Moreland (6-5) took the loss. Eliecer Navarro pitched the final three innings, allowing just one hit and striking out three to close out the game for his first South Atlantic League save. Evan Chambers had three hits for West Virginia and David Rubinstein added two. Omar Casamayor and Garabez Rosa had two hits apiece for Delmarva.
The Power and Shorebirds continue this four-game set at 7:05 pm on Tuesday. West Virginia's Kyle McPherson and Delmarva's Jesse Beal are the slated starters for the second game of the series at Appalachian Power Park.
