Jersey Shore BlueClaws News Release
GREENVILLE, SC - Trevor May recovered from a shaky start, and the BlueClaws blew open a close game in the sixth in a 5-1 win against the Greenville Drive Monday night.
Greenville has now dropped six games in a row while the Claws have won seven of ten.
May (4-1) walked three batters to load the bases in a 35-pitch first inning, but got Reymond Fuentes to pop out to third to end the threat.
He cruised from there, striking out eight through six scoreless innings and not walking another batter. He also held the drive to just three hits.
Jiwan James started the scoring in the first on a comedy of errors. James reached on a wild pitch after striking out against Greenville starter Pete Ruiz (7-8). He then took second on an error by shortstop Derrick Gibson, and scored on a Sebastian Valle double to make it 1-0 BlueClaws.
Lakewood broke open the game in the sixth. With one out Ruiz hit Michael Dabbs, let up a single to Leandro Castro, and both runners moved over on a passed ball.
Jonathan Singleton then grounded out to second to score one run, and Valle hit his 12th home run of the season to push the lead to 4-0. Stephen Batts picked up a base hit, stole second, and come in on a Jeremy Barnes RBI single for a 5-0 advantage.
The earned runs in the sixth were the first Ruiz had allowed over his last 18 innings pitched.
Greenville had one more chance at a rally in the eighth. Ronald Bermudez singled with one out and a runner on third to cut the deficit to 5-1, and the Drive loaded the bases against reliever Justin Beal with just one out.
Ebelin Lugo stepped in though and shut the Drive down, inducing two fly outs to preserve the lead.
Tuesday at 11 am RHP Josh Zeid (5-4, 3.23) will take on RHP Ryan Pressly (4-6, 3.89).
