Charleston RiverDogs News Release
AUGUSTA, Ga. -Three RiverDogs had three-hit games, and Josh Romanski won for the sixth time in seven starts, as Charleston outlasted Augusta, 8-4, in South Atlantic League action at Lake Olmstead Stadium Monday evening.
With the win, the RiverDogs have won six straight games for the first time since Sept. 2009 in improving to 20-17, 51-55 overall, while Augusta drops its third straight in falling to 18-18, 59-47 overall.
Charleston ratcheted four straight hits to start the third inning against Augusta's Craig Clark in assuming a 2-0 lead. Emerson Landoni doubled, Francisco Santana singled, while Slade Heathcott gave the RiverDogs the lead with a RBI single. After Kelvin Castro legged out a bunt single to load the bases, J.R. Murphy added a sacrifice fly.
Augusta came back in the bottom half on Nick Liles two-out RBI single off Romanski in cutting the deficit to 2-1.
Luke Anders led off the fourth for the GreenJackets with a single, and Tommy Joseph roped a RBI double to right-centerfield to square the affair at 2-2.
In the fifth, Castro hit a one-out single, stole second and took third on a throwing error, before coming plateward on Rob Lyerly's RBI single, giving the RiverDogs a 3-2 lead.
Anders tied the game at 3-3 in the sixth with a line-drive home run to right field for his 11th of the season.
Clark pitched 5.0 innings in a no-decision, permitting three runs on eight hits.
The RiverDogs barked back for three in the seventh in taking a 6-3 lead that would not be relinquished against reliever Hector Correa. Consecutive singles by Santana and Heathcott coupled with an Augusta error put second and third with no one out. Castro then contributed a two-run single to right field and took second on the throw home. Murphy's groundout moved him to third, and Lyerly's sacrifice fly brought him home.
Correa (3-3) surrendered three runs in 2.0 for the first time since April 20 and lost to Charleston for the second time in as many appearances.
Charleston continued to score with two more in the eighth, after DeAngelo Mack reached on a dropped fly ball, and Landoni and Santana delivered back-to-back RBI singles, increasing the margin to 8-3.
The GreenJackets notched three hits in the bottom half off Ronny Marte, inching to 8-4 on Joseph's second RBI double of the contest.
Romanski (7-3) lasted 6.0 innings in the triumph, allowing three runs on nine hits with a walk and a strikeout. The former University of San Diego standout is now 3-0 against the GreenJackets this season.
Castro, Landoni and Santana all had three hits to pace Charleston's 14-hit attack, while Heathcott added a pair. Castro has now driven in runs in seven straight contests for the first time in his career.
Game two of this tilt is set for Tuesday at 7:05 p.m., with Charleston sending right-hander Mike Solbach (2-3, 3.86 ERA) to the hill against Augusta right-hander Andy Reichard (2-0, 3.47 ERA).
