HICKORY, NC - The Hickory Crawdads lost the series opener, 8-7, against the Asheville Tourists, before 888 fans at L.P. Frans Stadium on a Monday night. RF Jared Prince extended his hitting streak to 20 games, now sitting just four games behind the Crawdads record of 24 set by Jeff Inglin in 1997.

Hickory (61-45, 21-15) got on the board first with three runs in the bottom of the second inning against Tourists starter LHP Jonathan Vargas (4-8, 7.20 ERA). 3B Matt West led off with a single to left field and scored on an RBI double to right-center field by 1B Mike Ortiz. 2B Jonathan Roof then got on with a bunt double and LF Ed Koncel walked to load the bases with nobody out for SS Edwin Garcia, who doubled in two runs to extend the 'Dads early advantage to 3-0.

The Tourists (51-55, 22-15) tied the game, 3-3, in the top of the fourth on back-to-back RBI doubles by DH Avery Barnes and SS Carlos Martinez.

The Crawdads reclaimed the lead with another three runs in the bottom of the fourth. C Leonel De Los Santos lined an RBI double to left field to plate Koncel from second for the first run of the frame. After CF Jared Bolden reached on a bunt single, DH Zach Zaneski hit a two-run single to left, scoring De Los Santos and Bolden to give Hickory their second three-run lead, 6-3.

Asheville knotted the game back up with a three-spot in the top of the fifth against Hickory reliever RHP Johnny Gunter (0-1, 6.94 ERA). They then tacked on single runs in the sixth and seventh frames to take an 8-6 lead.

Hickory trimmed the deficit to 8-7 in the top of the seventh inning on an RBI single by Roof, scoring Zaneski from second, but that was as close as they would come, falling short in the series opener.

Hickory starter RHP Neil Ramirez surrendered three runs on three hits and a walk while striking out six in the first 3.2 innings. Gunter took the loss, allowing four runs (three earned) on six hits and a walk over 1.1 relief innings. Vargas notched the win for Asheville with RHP Sheng-An Kuo picking up the save.
