Atlanta United FC News Release
ATLANTA - Thiago Almada, Ronald Hernández, Josef Martínez and Caleb Wiley have received call-ups from their respective national teams for the September FIFA window, the club announced today.
Almada, 21, has been called up to the Argentina senior national team for the first time by manager Lionel Scaloni for two friendlies as Argentina continues its preparation for the 2022 FIFA World Cup in November. Almada becomes just the second MLS player to be called into Argentina's national team, joining former Atlanta united player Pity Martínez (March 2019). Argentina will face Honduras on Sept. 23 at Miami's Hard Rock Stadium and Jamaica on Sept. 27 at Red Bull Arena in Harrison, New Jersey. Almada has made seven appearances for Argentina's U-20s, scoring one goal, and three appearances with the U-23s. The midfielder also represented Argentina at the 2021 Olympic Games in Tokyo where he made two appearances and had one assist.
Hernández and Martínez will join Venezuela for two friendlies against Iceland on Sept. 22 and United Arab Emirates on Sept. 27, both of which will be played in Austria. Hernández has made 30 appearances for Venezuela and recorded one goal and three assists. He appeared in 11 of Venezuela's 16 World Cup Qualifiers this past cycle and recorded an assist in two of his last four appearances. Martínez has made 61 career appearances for Venezuela and scored 13 goals with three assists.
Wiley, 17, will join the U.S. U-20 Men's Youth National Team for the Revelations Cup in Mexico City, Mexico from Sept. 19-28. The USA will play Peru on Sept. 21 at 5 p.m. ET, Mexico on Sept. 24 at 7 p.m. ET and Paraguay on Sept. 27 at 10 p.m. It's the U-20s' first training camp since winning the 2022 Concacaf U-20 Championship and clinching qualification to the 2023 FIFA U-20 World Cup as well as the 2024 Olympics in Paris. Wiley has made four appearances with the U.S. U-20s and made three appearances with the U.S. U-17s.
Atlanta hosts Philadelphia Union on Saturday, Sept. 17 at Mercedes-Benz Stadium (3:30 p.m. EST, UniMás, TUDN, Twitter, 92.9 The Game, La Mejor).
