
Former Whitecaps Pitcher Joins Wizards

Fort Wayne, IN â The San Diego Padres announced today that left-hander Chris Steinborn has been signed by the organization and assigned to the Fort Wayne Wizards pitching staff.
Steinborn will take the place of right-hander Phil Polanco, who was assigned to the Padres' extended spring training camp in Peoria, Arizona.
Steinborn was originally selected by the Detroit Tigers organization in the 36th round of the 2002 June Amateur Draft. He began the 2005 season with the Modesto Nuts, the California League High-A affiliate of the Colorado Rockies. Steinborn was signed by the Rockies after being selected in the second round of the Triple-A phase of the Rule 5 Draft in December of 2004.
The left-handed Steinborn spent parts of two seasons with the West Michigan Whitecaps in the Midwest League, including the entire 2004 season when he went 8-11 in 27 starts with a 3.99 earned run average. He allowed 173 hits and walked 37, striking out 105 in 160 1/3 innings for West Michigan. Steinborn split time between the Whitecaps and Oneonta of the New York-Penn League in 2003, combining to go 4-6 with a 4.14 ERA (33 earned runs in 71 2/3 innings). He made 24 appearances with eight starts, allowing 88 hits and issuing 25 walks, while striking out 38.
With Modesto this season, Steinborn appeared in 11 games, finishing 3-0 with a 7.90 ERA in 13 2/3 innings. He allowed 22 hits and six walks, while striking out eight.
Polanco signed with the Padres as a non-drafted free agent. The right-hander, from Los Angeles, California, was a teammate of former Wizards closer Leo Rosales at Cal-State Northridge. In his senior season in 2004, Polanco was 4-3 with eight saves and a 6.21 ERA in 30 appearances. Polanco allowed 48 hits and 16 walks, while striking out 41 in 33 innings for Cal-State Northridge.
Polanco was 0-1 with a 19.89 ERA in six games for the Wizards. He allowed 17 hits and 14 earned runs in 6 1/3 innings out of the bullpen.
