West Michigan Whitecaps News Release
COMSTOCK PARK - West Michigan fell behind 7-0 after two innings, but rallied for nine runs in the fourth on the way to an 8-10 victory over Kane County.
It was the first time this season that the Whitecaps had recovered from a deficit of more than three runs.
Jeff Frazier and Wilkin Ramirez hit back-to-back home runs at the beginning of the rally and each had RBI in their second at bats of the inning. Frazier doubled to give West Michigan an 8-7 lead. Ramirez came up with a sacrifice fly for a 9-7 advantage. It was the first time this season that the Whitecaps had gone back-to-back. The home runs give each player five total on the season.
All nine of the runs were charged to Cougars starter Derek Tharpe, who had not allowed a hit through three innings, but recorded only one out in the fourth.
West Michigan sent a season-high 13 batters to the plate in the fourth. Eight of the nine Whitecaps in the lineup reached base in the fourth. Nick McIntyre, who led off the inning scored twice, once on Frazier's two-run homer.
Justin Justice pulled the Whitecaps to within one on a three-run double. Steve Young followed with an RBI single that tied the game, 7-7.
Ramirez added an RBI on a single in the sixth. Kane County countered with a lead-off home run from Tommy Everidge in the eighth.
Kevin Melillo led off the game with a home run. Raul Padron added an RBI double later in the inning off starter Josh Rainwater.
In the second, the Cougars tacked-on five more runs and chased Rainwater from the game. In two innings, he allowed six hits and just two walks but only four of the seven runs were earned.
Dan Konecny came on and pitched the next 4.2 innings without allowing a run to facilitate the comeback and earn the win.
Anthony Tomey pitched a scoreless inning of relief and Ed Clelland threw one pitch - a line out to right by Eddie Kim - to end the game and earn a save.
The Final Meeting: On Friday, the Whitecaps and Cougars meet in West Michigan for the last time during this regular season. RHP Andrew Kown (1-5, 5.09) will be on the mound for West Michigan against Kane County RHP Jared Trout (1-1, 2.55). The Eikenhout Incorporated Pre Game Show begins at 6:50 p.m. on 1340 AM WBBL and at mlive.com.
