Peoria Chiefs News Release
The Peoria Chiefs return to O'Brien Field on Saturday, June 4th after an eight-game road trip and will host the Lansing Lugnuts in a four-game series. The Lugnuts are in their first season as an affiliate of the Toronto Blue Jays. Heading into the last two games of the road trip the Chiefs are 26-27 on the season and 4-2 on the current road trip.
Saturday June 4th the game begins at 6:30 PM and will feature another spectacular post game fireworks show presented by CEFCU. Saturday night is also our annual Boy Scout Night and many area Boy Scouts will spend the night on the field following the game.
Sunday June 5th is a Family Fun Day as the 2005 Chiefs Baseball Card Set will be given away to the first 1500 kids 14 and under. Be sure to get the baseball cards of all of the up-and-coming stars of the Chiefs, including Eric Patterson, Ryan Harvey, and Sean Gallagher. You can get those cards signed after the game as players will sign autographs and kids can run the bases. Game time is 2:00.
Monday June 6th is the third of four games with the Lugnuts, and it's a Mountain Dew Half Price Monday. All tickets for the game can be purchased at half price. Game time is 7:00.
The Chiefs will wrap up their four-game set with Lansing on Tuesday, June 7th. That game will be a Taco Bell Combo Tuesday. Purchase a combo meal at any local Peoria area Taco Bell before 6 P.M. and receive a voucher for two box seats for Tuesday's game. The game will start at 7:00.
Youth Clinic Set for June 6-8
Also don't forget this year's Youth Baseball Clinic scheduled for June 6-8. Join Chiefs manager Julio Garcia, pitching coach Tom Pratt, hitting coach Ricardo Medina and several Peoria Chiefs players at O'Brien Field to receive professional hitting, fielding, and pitching instruction. Space is limited to the first 100 applicants between the ages 7-14. Cost is $75 per participant and will include an official Chiefs t-shirt and baseball cap along with a ticket to the June 10th game against the Beloit Snappers. The camp runs each day from 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM. Each participant will need to bring a glove and a pair of baseball/tennis shoes. No metal spikes are allowed. Montanez Player of Month For May
After being selected with the 3rd overall pick by the Chicago Cubs in the 2000 draft at age 18, Luis Montanez comes to Peoria for his sixth season in the organization. Montanez split time last season between Boise and Daytona after making a position change from the middle infield to the outfield. For the Hawks, Montanez hit .297 with eight home runs and 42 RBI in 72 games in being named a Northwest League all-star.
Montanez signed a pro contract on June 6, 2000 and tore up the rookie league that year, hitting .344 with two home runs and 37 RBI in just 50 games. He also smacked 16 doubles and seven triples before earning an eight-game stint in Lansing during his first season.
He then played all of 2001 at Lansing of the Midwest League, playing for current Chiefs manager Julio Garcia. Montanez hit .255, starting 112 games at shortstop and 12 more as a designated hitter.
Montanez spent all of 2002 and 2003 with Daytona of the Florida State League, as he drove in 59 runs for the Cubs in 2002 with four home runs and 21 doubles. In 2003, he played in 126 games, belting five home runs and driving in 38.
This season, as of May 31, Montanez is off to a quick start with a .321 average and leads the Midwest League in doubles with 18. He also is tied for the team lead in RBI with 25.
