Kane County Cougars News Release
Grand Rapids, MI â The Kane County Cougars possessed a 7-0 lead entering the fourth inning Thursday afternoon in West Michigan, but the Whitecaps used a nine-run fourth to snare the lead and advance for a 10-8 win at Fifth Third Ballpark. Jose Pineda and Raul Padron each had two RBI in the Cougars' defeat.
Kane County scored twice in the first against West Michigan's starter Josh Rainwater. Kevin Melillo led off the game with a solo home run for a quick 1-0 lead. Then, after Javier Herrera singled, Padron yanked a double to score Herrera from first to put the Cougars ahead 2-0. They added to it with five more tallies in the second against Rainwater, sending all nine men to the plate. Tommy Everidge and Nick Blasi singled, Melillo walked and Kory Wayment was hit by a pitch to make it 3-0. After a fielder's choice and an error made it 4-0, Padron connected for a sacrifice fly to make 5-0. Pineda cracked a two-run single for a 7-0 game.
Cougars starter Derek Tharpe hadn't allowed a hit through three innings but fell apart in the fourth. The Whitecaps had 13 men bat. Jeff Frazier had three RBI in the inning, including a two-run homer that was followed by a solo shot from Wilkin Ramirez. The Cougars trailed 9-7 by the time Steve Sharpe replaced Tharpe later in the frame. The Whitecaps got one run off Sharpe in the sixth for a 10-7 score. Everidge nailed a solo home run to start the eighth for a 10-8 game that became the final score.
Tharpe (1-4) took the loss, Dan Konecny (2-4) got the relief win for West Michigan and Ed Clelland notched his first save. The series finale is Friday at 7 p.m. EDT. It will be an internet-only broadcast. Jared Trout (1-1, 2.55) goes against right-hander Andrew Kown (1-5, 5.09). After that game the Cougars will head back to Elfstrom Stadium to begin a four-game series Saturday night against the Fort Wayne Wizards.
