Rattlers bite back with 6-2 win
June 2, 2005 - Midwest League (MWL1)
Cedar Rapids Kernels News Release
The Kernels scored two runs in the second inning but that would prove to be the end of their scoring opportunities as two Wisconsin pitchers combined to defeat Cedar Rapids 6-2 in front of 3,220 sun-drenched fans at Veterans Memorial Stadium Thursday afternoon.
Jordan Renz proved to be the catalyst in the Kernels offense going 2-for-3 at the plate with an RBI and a run scored. Renz lined a single to center off Wisconsin starter Jason Snyder that chased Warner Madrigal home. Renz eventually made his way to third via a stolen base and a wild pitch before crossing home on a single by Richard Giannotti.
That would be the only two runs the Kernels would muster off Snyder over his six innings of work. Snyder gave up seven hits but struck out five Kernels without walking a single one before turning the game over to lefty Eric O'Flaherty for the final three frames. No one could touch O'Flaherty as he notched his sixth save, walking two and striking out a pair.
Freddy Sandoval stood ready to score on third in the third after a one out double but was stranded, one of six left on the bases by the Kernels on Thursday.
Nick Green pitched well in a spot start for the Kernels, tossing five innings of six-hit ball and allowing four runs (three earned) with a single strike out and walk. One of the six hits was a two-run homer by Marshall Hubbard in the fourth. Wisconsin added another run that inning when Drew Toussaint couldn't handle a fly ball to left and Yung Chi Chen was able to score.
The Timber Rattlers also scored one run in the first off Green and two in the eighth off Kernel reliever Jamie Douglas. Both of Douglas' runs were unearned as the result of an errant pickoff attempt.
Wisconsin and the Kernels close out their four game series tomorrow night at 7 p.m. before the Kernels hit the road for a nine day, eight game road trip to South Bend and Wisconsin. Gates open at Veterans Memorial Stadium at 6 p.m.
