Southwest Michigan Devil Rays News Release
BATTLE CREEK, Mich. -- The no-hit magic from five nights ago did not last for Jino Gonzalez in a 9-3 loss for the Southwest Michigan Devil Rays to the Peoria Chiefs Thursday night at C.O. Brown Stadium.
Gonzalez, who started the franchise's only nine-inning home no-hitter on May 28, was roughed up for seven hits, five runs, four of which were earned, two walks and four strikeouts in four innings. Eddie De La Cruz, Tony Perez and Aaron Walker all entered in relief without much improvement. The Devil Rays defense committed three errors as well.
Peoria got on the board quickly, scoring in each of their first three innings. The Devil Rays offense was slow to retaliate as they scored three runs on eight hits and were down 5-1 after three. After a run came across in the fourth on a Christian Lopez single, John Jaso hit his seventh home run of the season, with one out in the sixth to make it a 5-3 deficit. Travis Schlichting had the team's other run batted in.
Southwest Michigan will try to even their eight game homestand with a 4-4 record on Friday night. The Devil Rays are presenting Rally, a nationally known mascot in addition to Girl Scout Night, where girl scouts will enjoy an evening at C.O. Brown Stadium. For more information, call Robin Santiago at 269-660-2287.
Devil Rays RHP Andy Sonnanstine (3-3, 3.05) will take the hill against Peoria's Chris Shaver (2-4, 3.71). Game time is 7:05 p.m.
