Burlington Bees News Release
Burlington, IA (June 2, 2005) - The Burlington Bees (25-28) left the bases loaded in both the seventh and eighth innings and left a total of nine men on base in a 4-2 loss to the Beloit Snappers (26-28) at Community Field tonight. The loss snaps the Bees three-game winning streak, but the Bees still lead this series 2-1 and are 5-2 on this home stand.
Bees' starter Billy Buckner (3-7) pitched a career-high 7.2 innings and allowed four runs (three earned) on nine hits and struck out six. Three of the four runs came on solo homers. Tarrance Patterson hit the first homer leading off the fifth. The ball actually bounced over the wall, but the umpires saw it as a home run. The disputed call turned out to be a moot point when two batters later Javier Sanchez belted a solo shot over the wall to put the Snappers ahead 2-1.
Bees' 3B Eddie Solis led off the bottom of the fifth with a solo homer of his own to tie the game at two, but Deacon Burns led off the top of the sixth inning with a solo homer to right and the Snappers had the lead back at 3-2. The Snappers got the final run in the top of the eighth. With a man at second and one out, Solis had a ground ball go through his legs for an error at third. After a walk loaded the bases, Patterson drove in Burns with a sacrifice fly to right. The run was unearned. After another walk to reload the bases, Buckner was lifted for Chad Blackwell who got Sanchez to pop out on the first pitch to end the inning.
Snappers' starter Jose Mijares (2-0) allowed two runs on three hits in five innings for the win. LH Alexander Smit pitched two scoreless innings despite walking five. He walked the first two men in the seventh and Irving Falu bunted the runners to second and third, but they were stranded on a strikeout and a groundout after a third walk loaded the bases. JP Martinez took over in the eighth and allowed a single and two walks to load the bases with two outs, but got Falu to bounce back to the mound to end the inning. Martinez struck out the side in the ninth for his fifth save.
The Bees and Snappers will wrap up this series tomorrow night at 7:00 at Community Field. RH Luis Cota (2-2, 1.91) will start for the Bees against RH Josh Hill (0-2, 4.36) for the Snappers. The gates will open at 6:00 for a T-G-I Bud Night featuring 2-for-$3 specials on all cans of Budweiser products throughout the game. Fans will also receive a free 8x10 color team photo sponsored by Burlington Trailways and Photovisions on their way into the game. The game will be broadcast live on KBUR AM 1490 and KBKB AM 1360 with the pre-game show starting at 6:40.
